George is my 3rd Great Grandfather on my Dad’s side of the family. Researching the name Jackson has proved tricky as there are loads of them – particularly in the North West (they fill half the phone book!). Whoever stated that people didn’t stray far from home in the 1800s hadn’t met my family – George in particular moved around a fair bit – being a carpenter on the railways would have sent him all over the place!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George Jackson was born circa 1822 in Bath. No records or trace have been found of his birth or baptism to date. The only record of his marriage is from his youngest daughters birth record. As she was born in Scotland, this information was recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With George being a Carpenter on the Railways, they moved around a fair bit as you will see from census info and birth records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first time we THINK we come across George was in 1841. We can’t 100% be certain this is our George, but the information fits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1845 – Marriage to Ellen\/Helen Skirving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

George married Helen \/ Ellen SKIRVING \/ SKIRVEN<\/strong><\/a> at St Giles, Edinburgh on 23rd August 1845. Whilst this information was stated on their daughter\u2019s birth certificate, we\u2019ve not been able to track down any church record of this marriage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was only when watching the television coverage following the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II that I realised St Giles is in fact the Cathedral in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n\n\n

1852 – Birth of daughter, Ellen Jackson<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
In September 1852, the family were living in Lyng, Somerset where their eldest known daughter, Ellen, was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1854 – Birth of son, John Jackson<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
John JACKSON <\/strong>b. 1854 in Saltash, Cornwall. Whilst John appears on the Census as being born in St Stephens\/Plymouth, frustratingly, I’ve not actually managed to track down his birth certificate or any baptism record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He married Louisa Southway on 22nd June 1874 at St George, Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire. He died in Liverpool on 31st January 1937 and is buried in Anfield Cemetery (Section 21; Plot 1564)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1858 – Birth of daughter, Sarah Ann<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sarah Ann JACKSON <\/strong>b. 22 September 1858 in Harrabeer Hutt\/Heath, Buckland Monachorum, Devon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We’ve been unable to trace her on the census beyond 1874 when she was a witness at her brother John’s wedding.  No luck either of finding any record of a marriage or her death.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
A bit of a mystery as “Sarah Ann Jervis, Aunt” registered her nephew, John George Jackson’s death in 1915 – her address at the time was 112 Ramsden Street, Barrow-in-Furness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Initially it looked as though Sarah had married a “Jervis” but this proved to be a dead end. However the Ramsden Street address given is the address our “Lewis” Ancestors lived at that time (her nephew – John George Jackson’s wife’s maternal family). It’s possible that the name has been mis-trancribed on the version of the death certificate I received and it’s in fact Sarah Lewis that recorded his death (I trangress).

A new station opened in Newcastleton on 1st March 1862 which is probably the reason why George and family had relocated here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly after the 1871 Census, the family moved up to Barrow-in-Furness and future spouses, Levi Brinkworth and Louisa Southway followed.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
So far, I’ve struggled to find any connection of Frank Goodenough to George Jackson – although I think I have probably pinpointed a strong possibility of Frank born in Westbury (but mothers maiden name is not Jackson).  As Ellen is from Scotland, it’s not likely (but not impossible) the family connection is on her side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1873 – Marriage of Daughter, Ellen Jackson<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ellen Jackson married Levi Brinkworth at St George on 25 December 1873 at St George, Barrow-in-Furness. They moved around a bit with children born in Birkenhead and Barrow before settling in Grangetown nr Cardiff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Levi and Ellen had 7 children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
