William Southway (various slight spelling variations including Southey) was the second born son of James Southway and Elizabeth Filer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was born in Wells, Somerset in 1821\/2 and baptised on 11th January at St Mary, West Harptree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From looking at where his siblings were born, the family seemed to live in West Harptree between 1820 – 1835 although a couple of children were born in nearby Wells (they still baptised in West Harptree).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

William married Esther (Hester) Williams in 1848 and together they had 10 children. They lived in the Cumberland Road area of Clifton all their married life. They would have seen the Clifton Suspension Bridge being built (just around the corner!) as this opened in 1864.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By all accounts, the family remained close with William’s siblings living close by; several of his children also appear to have enjoyed a close relationship with several moving away from Clifton and ending up in a different city, living close by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

William and Esther ended up having at least 57 grandchildren although several died in infancy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Esther died in 1901 and William passed away in 1905. At the time, it looks as though they were living and being looked after by their daughter, Emma Jemima, registered both their deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It looks as though William & Esther had a son just before they married in 1848.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
William Southway was born in 1847 and baptised at St Andrew’s in Clifton on the same day as two of his cousins; Eliza Ann (daughter of James & Elizabeth Southway) and William Charles Davis (son of Charles and Ann Davis).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It looks as though William died in 1848.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

William Southway married Hester (Esther) Jane Williams on 11th June 1848 at The Parish Church in Bedminster.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was witnessed by James Southway and Benjamin John Room(?).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likely the Parish Church of Bedminster was St John’s Parish Church.  It was blitzed during the was and demolished in 1967.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

William Jacob Southway was born early in 1849 in Black Horse Lane, Clifton. He was baptised on 19th May 1849 at St Andrew, Clifton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On 16 Jan 1869, he married Catherine Morisey at St Andrew, a ceremony witnessed by Esther Southway (X) and J M Clay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
