West Harptree\" width=\"536\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/48028479@N00\/1712244321\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/48028479@N00\/1712244321\/\">Photo thanks to Canis Major (Steve)<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>From looking at where his siblings were born, the family seemed to live in West Harptree between 1820 &#8211; 1835 although a couple of children were born in nearby Wells (they still baptised in West Harptree).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William married Esther (Hester) Williams in 1848 and together they had 10 children.  They lived in the Cumberland Road area of Clifton all their married life.  They would have seen the Clifton Suspension Bridge being built (just around the corner!) as this opened in 1864.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By all accounts, the family remained close with William&#8217;s siblings living close by; several of his children also appear to have enjoyed a close relationship with several moving away from Clifton and ending up in a different city, living close by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William and Esther ended up having at least 57 grandchildren although several died in infancy.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Esther died in 1901 and William passed away in 1905. Esther had a son just before they married in 1848.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William Southway was born in 1847 and baptised at St Andrew&#8217;s in Clifton on the same day as two of his cousins; Eliza Ann (daughter of James &amp; He was baptised on 19th May 1849 at St Andrew, Clifton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 16 Jan 1869, he married Catherine Morisey at St Andrew, a ceremony witnessed by Esther Southway (X) and J M Clay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They had three children together:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Isabella Southway (1870 &#8211; When the Jackson family moved up to Barrow-in-Furness, she moved with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She married John Jackson on 22nd June 1874 at St George, Barrow in Furness.  Witnesses were John&#8217;s sister, Sarah Ann Jackson, and John Satterley (who married Louisa&#8217;s older sister, Anna Maria). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John and Louisa had seven children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jane Louisa Jackson (1875 &#8211; )<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>John George Jackson (1879 &#8211; 1915)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sarah Ann Jackson (1881 &#8211; 1887)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Susannah Jackson (1881 &#8211; 1882)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>James William Jackson (1887 &#8211; 1948)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bertha Jackson (1891 &#8211; 1956)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ada (Louisa) Jackson (1894 &#8211; 1953)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At some point in the mid-late 1890&#8217;s, John, Louisa, James William and Ada moved down to Liverpool; at the time of the 1901 census, Bertha remained in Barrow with brother, John George, and his new wife Ellen.  She also moved down to Liverpool by the time of the 1911 census.  Louisa&#8217;s sister, Anna Maria, husband John Satterley and family also moved to Liverpool and were living a couple of doors down the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everton \/ Kirkdale became their home.  Dad and Uncle Ronnie had told us that the Liverpool side of the family were all killed during WW2 when the family house took a direct hit.  However, whilst it looks as though the street Bertha lived on (Vesuvius Street) was hit by a bomb, all the family looks to have survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Louisa Jackson died in 1920 and husband John, passed away on 31st December 1937. During his short life, various agencies inspected the home and raised concerns that Henry was being neglected. On one visit, he was found so emaciated, they took him into the workhouse to look after him. He eventually fell into a coma and died which is when Agnes was charged with his manslaughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You do feel for the children when reading these articles.<\/p>\n\n\n<div She was charged with receiving stolen goods and to two months in jail. She was baptised alongside her older sister, Emma Jemima, on 10th October 1866 at St Andrews in Clifton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She married Edwin Gray at St Augustine&#8217;s on 24th August 1884 &#8211; a ceremony witnessed by her sister, Emma Jemima, and her future husband, Albert W May.  Edwin and Mary had two children together:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Walter Edwin Gray (1885 &#8211; )<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jessie Elizabeth Gray (1886 &#8211; )<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Mary died in the late 1880s &#8211; Edwin was a widower at the time of the 1891 Census. Just prior to her death, she was living at the Gloucester Hotel, 300 Hotwells Road, Bristol with her youngest son, Mervyn Alec.
