Hurtigruten Coastal Explorer – Day 11 (Kristiansund)

Read Time:3 Minute, 30 Second

We were stopping at just three ports today. A very early morning stop back in Trondheim this morning – We docked around 6.30am and would be leaving at 9.30am but a lot of passengers decided to remain onboard. Had a bite to eat for breakfast then the gathering up on Deck 7 for the sail past Monkholmen and the flag-waving to greet Polarlys as she was arriving in Trondheim for her Northbound visit.

No competition – only a couple of people up on deck and no flags! Whilst we were all up there, a group photo was taken.

Out on deck, Jon finally plucked up the courage to add his day-glo orange hood to his jacket. He reminded us of Kenny from South Park!

There was a Coastal Kitchen demonstration up on Deck 7 this afternoon – how to fillet a salmon. We spent the early part of the afternoon watching the scenery pass us by from the Explorer Lounge. It felt very strange to see ports with very little snow on the ground.

We had to wait until the afternoon before getting off the ship. Today’s port of call was Kristiansund – home of the Klippfish.

We were only in port for a little less than 1 hour so there was just enough time to walk around the harbour and see the Klippfish Woman and Boy Statues. Everyone was waiting for the ship to dock so they could quickly get off the ship – it was like the start of a Grand Prix with everyone determined to make it there and back as quickly as possible!

It had warmed up a fair bit so it was a little icy in patches but absolutely fine for a quick walk. It took about 15 mins to walk there. Jon spotted some large spanners in a shop window which bemused him! Not sure why he needs a spanner that large!

Back onboard and out on deck for the sailaway – if there was a port where anyone would miss the ship, this would be it. The ships whistle sounded the 10 minute warning – which sent a couple running for the ship, but everyone seemed to have made it back onboard.

Not long until our dinner reservation at Kysten this evening – we enjoyed it so much the first time, we decided to eat here again. I had a glass of the Havets Bobler – it’s a sparkling wine made by a vineyard in Sussex for Hurtigruten (Norway doesn’t grow grapes!).

They store the bottles underwater in the Barents Sea for six months. It was really nice.

For starters, we both chose the Raw Prawns and Sea Urchin starters followed by the Reindeer for the main course.

For pudding, I went for the Rice Pancakes and Jon the cheeseboard. The Pancakes with all the little bits accompanying them was amazing.

Time for the FA Cup draw to take place – Newcastle had drawn Manchester City in the next round. We found out Christoffer was a Man Utd fan so he had a bit of a chat with Jon about clubs with owners that don’t care about the clubs. Newcastle have moved on from their owner but Man Utd still have issues with theirs.

We were finishing off our meal as we pulled into Molde, the third port of today.

From Kysten, it was up to the Explorer Lounge for the second quiz of the cruise. No pressure from David (Expedition Team) – he came up to us and said no-one has ever won back to back quizzes. This quiz was about the cruise.

We did better than we thought we would – 10/15. Jon was 2km off guessing the length of Trondheimfjord – 132km instead of 130km. Three couples were tied on 11/15. Tiebreaker was guessing the combined age of Mats and David. We were miles out! The Norwegian sea air obviously has anti-aging properties. We thought mid-70s but their combined age was 110!!

Back to the cabin to start packing! We were heading home tomorrow. Suitcases needed to be out by the lifts by 10am in the morning and vacate the cabin completely by 12 noon.
