Northumberland – Warkworth & Bamburgh Castles

A flying visit up North for the weekend for a Christening. We were surprise guests – Mick had no idea we were going so needed to be out of Hebburn for the day so the car parked outside Margaret & Ray’s house didn’t give the game away!

Saturday was a glorious sunny day so we decided to head up the Northumberland Coast and visit some castles.

First stop was Warkworth Castle, a ruined castle maintained by English Heritage.

It was surprising just how many parts of the castle left that you could still access and explore.

We could have spent more time at Warkworth but we really want to go to Bamburgh Castle as well.  It was a little further up the coast.  Unlike Warkworth, the castle is home to the Armstrong Family so would be a very different visit.

We hadn’t really left enough time to do this visit justice – Callum was left disappointed we didn’t call into the teashop as we were running out of time to see everything before the castle closed for the evening.  As we were wandering around, we did see that you could hire one of the towers for a stay.  Not sure what the cost would be, but this would be a stunning location for a stay … especially if the weather was as good as it was today.

A very traditional keep.

Again, more spectacular views up the Northumberland coast.

We drove back to Hebburn, stopping in Seahouses on the way back – and grabbed a cone of chips to eat by the pier whilst we watched the fishing and tour boats come back.  From here you can take a boat out to the Farne Islands, so hopefully we will get the opportunity to do this on another visit.
