We’re All Going To The Zoo …

Callum would finally get his wish and travel on the Metro.  We were going to the Smithsonian National Zoo today and our fingers crossed we would get to see the Giant Pandas!

After figuring out how to buy tickets (and what tickets to buy!) were were on our way on the Red Line heading up to Woodley Park.  One of the stops for the Zoo.  A 10 minute walk and we were at the Zoo.  Lemur feeding was on the cards at 10.30am but decided to go there via the Panda House as we thought it would be quieter first thing.

The baby Panda had climbed up a tree so we had a lovely glimpse of his backside!  Going inside, the Mummy Panda was happily chomping away on some Bamboo (and admittedly, the photos looked like she was a model!).  Daddy Panda was obviously in a strop as he was sat facing the wall!  It was fantastic to see as none of use had seen a real life giant Panda before.

Throughout the day we saw Lions, Tigers, Cheetahs, Gorillas, Snakes, Zebras, loads of turtles and a Spectacled Bear.  A great day out walking around and amazing that the entire zoo is free. It was an incredibly hot day and the zoo had their misters in action. Callum took the opportunity to cool down at every possible chance.

We spent the whole day there as there was so much to see – alas no time to visit the reptile House twice much to Callum’s dismay but think we saw nearly everything there was to see.

Back to the hotel for a cool down and a refreshing beer before our meal at Legal Sea Foods.  We visited here 14 years ago when Jon and I were in Washington and had a fabulous meal – hope it’s as good as we remember!  Wonder if they still have Turleys on the wine list – bet it’s no longer $50 a bottle!!

Legal Sea Food was as good as we remember.  Callum picked up the Kids Menu- how many restaurants have lobster on the menu!  No guesses for what Callum chose.  Jon matched Callum’s choice and also opted for lobster – the medium sized portion, not the large!  I chose Cioppini – a mix of clams, scallops, fish, lobster in a light tomato broth.

For starters we shared some crab cakes, popcorn shrimp and a bowl of clam chowder.  It was all really tasty.  Alas, Turley’s Zinfandel was no longer on the wine list, but we shared a lovely bottle of Chardonnay from the Cakebread Winery.  We think the restaurant had changed locations from the last time we visited as we do not remember it being opposite the Verizon Center or in China Town.  The ambiance was very modern whilst maintaining the old decor in half the building.

A fab meal and will be on our list of places to visit next time we travel to the East Coast.
