American Museum of Natural History & Sunset Sail
A trip up to the American Natural History Museum this morning, after checking out where we’d pick our bus up from for the trip down to Washington. $69 for the three of us to travel from NY to Washington – costs less than the cost of a taxi from the hotel to the airport!
Breakfast was at the Potbelly Sandwich Shop – the boys had milkshakes made with fresh fruit and the verdict was they were the best they’d tasted so far.
Straight into the museum from the subway and it quickly became apparent that the museum was huge (and a couple of the rooms had been renamed so we hadn’t a clue where we were. After wandering around aimlessly we went throughout the Planet Earth exhibit and then found the American Animals exhibit. It was really well displayed – all the animals (we assume stuffed!) were in large display cases complete with scenery typical to their habitat. Unlike the Natural History Museum back home, it seemed they didn’t really have enough exhibits to fill the space, whereas in London, they are crammed it to fit as much as possible.
We wandered through several other exhibitions before finding the dinosaur and reptile rooms … some really cool skeletons here including a Stegosaurus, Triceratops and T-Rex.
For lunch we headed back to Bubba Gumps in Times Square – Callum his Popcorm Shrimp with a Fizzy Fun drink in a flashing glass. I had the Coconut Shrimp and Jon the Shrimp stuffed with Crab Cakes, or should that be Crab Cakes with embedded shrimp!
After realising the time, we caught the subway down to South Ferry ready for our clipper sail. At 4.30pm, the ship set sail and thankfully there was a little wind so we sailed towards the Brooklyn Bridge then headed around Governor’s Island before heading to the Statue of Liberty. It was still quite warm (in the 80’s) but the breeze was very welcome. We carried on around the island then headed towards Manhattan. Again some great photos of the Manhattan Skyline – no haze or fog!

Subway and back to the hotel to cool down before heading out for the evening meal. We found a little French restaurant next to the Radisson Hotel. I opted for a Cobb Salad (again!) and Jon and Callum tucked into a bowl of mussels with frites! Callum declared he was full and was also tired so no pudding for us! As we walked back to our hotel, we noticed the Empire State was lit up in colour.
The man on the bridge – a 24 year old Russian – was up in court today – passport confiscated and couldn’t post his bail of $5,000 so was remanded until his court hearing on Friday. He seems to be into extreme photography as he’d taken some selfies of him on the edge of the Grand Canyon.
