Gloucester: Extreme Robots

Read Time:1 Minute, 18 Second

Back in the day, Jon and I loved watching Robot Wars on TV. Teams build their own robots, with weapons, self-righters, flippers and spinning discs and then go to battle against each other. Throw in a couple of house robots designed to strike out if any bot gets within reach and it’s a crazy half hour of fun!

Battlebots in the US follows the same lines and for the last couple of years, the UK robot designers head to Extreme Robots to battle against each other. The event tours around the UK and has picked up an strong following.

We saw the show in Guildford pre-COVID times and this time the tour was heading to Gloucester so a great opportunity to watch the show and catch up with Callum.

Matilda was in the entrance lobby to greet everyone coming along to the show.

The battle zone was a large Perspex box in the centre of the sports hall. It was fully contained to hopefully ensure no stray bits of metal from the robots (the a robot flipped out of the arena) could hit the spectators, and the flames didn’t burn anything other than the opposition! Behind the battle zone is the roboteers area – where they repair their robots in between battles.

During the half time break, the VIP tickets holders can go behind the scenes into the battle zone and then to see the teams and robots.

The brilliant roboteers had been working hard to get another true legend of Robot Wars up and running: Sir Killalot.
