Reading – Faulty Towers Dining Experience

Callum has really got into watching some of the old, classic comedies on TV of late, one of which is Fawlty Towers.  We stumbled by chance on the Faulty Towers Dining Experience in London – but this was a little pricey at £70/head.  When we went to their website, we also discovered that they go out and about to various towns and cities – and one place they visited was Reading – prices were still expensive, but a fair bit cheaper.

Several “shows” had already sold out but we got tickets for February show.  We drove … and once we’d figured out how to get the car into the carpark, and us as pedestrians out(!), we made our way to the Crowne Plaza Hotel, near Caversham Bridge.

We collected our free drink on arrival and bought some water for the table at the bar (a few technical problems on the tills – not sure if this was deliberate or co-incidental!), and we were all held in the bar area, not allowed through to the tables.

I won’t go into specifics as this will spoil the evening for anyone that decides to give the evening a go.   A fair bit was obviously scripted but some was improvised depending on the audience. Suffice to say that Jon and Callum were the first to be picked on and the show incorporated lots of much-loved references to the shows (rats, Germans, Waldorf salad all featured).  The three actors were brilliant with their characterisations, impersonations and even smells (Sybil and her cigarette aroma!) and worked well around all the tables, picking on people (especially those with birthdays!)

The meal was OK – it’s catering for the masses so nothing terribly exciting, BUT it did have that added Fawlty Towers touch.

We really enjoyed the evening – would we do this again? Absolutely! This is a great evening, and perfect for a group evening out.
