Newcastle Bound

We had booked our trip to Newcastle when the Premiership fixtures had been released. It was the Newcastle v Chelsea clash – another tough match for Newcastle as they were playing four of the best teams in the Premiership to kick off the 2018/19 season.

Alas, since booking the trip, Granny had been taken into hospital so we would be spending as much time as possible with her around the match. The hospital was in South Shields – about a 15 minute drive from Jon’s parents and we couldn’t fault the care being given to Jon’s mum.

Jon’s mum had a few visitors on Saturday afternoon so we dived out to the seafront for an hour or so. Just very concious of the number of visitors and the other patients on the ward.

First stop was Minchella’s – the ice cream place. Callum and Jon both went for Ferraro Rocher sundaes which I had the banoffee waffles.

A walk along the seafront before heading back to the hospital to see Granny. Bracing wind, massive beach and great views up the coast to North Shields and Tynemouth Abbey.

The next day, it was back to the hospital to spend time with Granny before heading into Newcastle for the match.

It took a while to find somewhere to park in the city, with the usual car parks all full. It was then a walk across to St James Park. Tickets for this match were at the other end of the stand to where we’ve previously sat. Luckily I was on an end as the leg room was ridiculously tight.

A bright start for Newcastle and they were holding off Chelsea for a while. Chelsea scored first from a penalty. The crowd went wild as Joselu equalised for Newcastle and everyone thought the points would be shared. Alas, Yedlin turned the ball into his own net in the final minutes of the match which saw Chelsea head home with 3 points in the bag.
