Friday 24th August
Everything happens all at once! Deliveries, builders and the grinder all arriving together! Edwin and Jay worked on digging out all the holes to the depths required by the building inspector and also getting everything ready to move the soil pipes and pipes taking the water from the drain pipe.
We were left with a hole under the new patio door … so this was temporarily blocked up we would have all the neighbourhood cats in the house, setting the alarms off!
The Grinder arrived mid-morning with his machine and took about an hour to grind out all the stumps and roots that he could see. A company we are happy to recommend – Rhino Grinding.
Thursday 23rd August
Jack was in this morning tidying up the site and breaking down all the old kitchen units to put in the skip. “The Grinder” was coming in tomorrow to grind out the stumps of the old Leylandii trees and some roots and needed to get him machinery around.
Edwin had called the building inspector and left strict instructions to call him when she was heading around so he could be here to discuss the steels first hand. Naturally, she never called, so it was down to Jack to do his best to answer questions. Edwin was not a happy-chappy!
More complications as the soil pipe was right under where the steel needed to sit. The building inspector’s suggestion was that the structural engineers could design a mesh that would sit over the pipes to hold the steel. Edwin spoke to her later and asked for permission to move the pipes which she did eventually agree to.
We now have more holes … back down to original foundations level (again, building inspectors request), and as quick as the guys dig, all the sides keep collapsing in.
At the moment, it seems like we are making no progress at all.
Edwin started on extending the roof to accommodate the new bay window (the new tiles don’t look so obvious when viewed at a distance!).
And he also made the garage window boarding at the front a little more substantial and secure. Framework and insulation was also added to the front wall. Again, just waiting for the new window to be installed next week. We do need to get rid of some of the stuff in this area – no room for the chest freezer in the remaining part of the garage!
Wednesday 22nd August
We weren’t expecting any builders to be on site today … so we thought we would have a little lie-in this morning. No such chance as a delivery arrived!!
Tuesday 21st August
Brickwork on the outside bay is now complete ready for the new bay window to be fitted. This will be a case of taking the old and fitting the new window on the same day … new windows scheduled to be delivered on the Tuesday after the Bank Holiday.

Edwin shared our concerns that the new window would either not fit under the existing roof line … or need to have a huge window ledge! Will leave that one down to the architect to resolve.
Monday 20th August
House still propped up on steels and holes need to be dug to support the steels. Work started inside on the garage conversion. Dividing partition has been installed and it will actually be a good sized room.
