Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

Callum’s birthday weekend and he decided we would head to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard as his birthday day out. Granda was staying with us this weekend and he whole-heartedly approved. We’d previously been down and explored HMS Warrior so HMS Victory was top of the list for this visit.

Granda was well and truly in his element. We explored Victory from top to bottom, learning about life onboard in the early 1800s.

We also went onboard HMS M33 – one of the last surviving British WW1 Warships. It was originally built in 1915 under the orders of Winston Churchill. M33 is the only British ship that survived the Dardanelles Campaign (1915-16) – Gallipoli.

On board, there is a film showing the Gallipoli Campaign and why there was such a high loss of life from the allied forces – it was incredibly moving.

After an ice-cream, we then ventured into one of the museums – none of us had previously explored here previously. This museum was dedicated to figureheads – whey they came about and replicas of some rather ornate versions.

The day was coming to an end and took advantage of the late afternoon sunshine and took a cruise around the harbour. The boat takes you around the harbour, pointing out a lot of the ships currently in port and some of the special features incorporated into the design.

We jumped ship at Gunwharf Quays and headed back to the car and home.
