Saturday 20th August
Weather: Foggy morning, but lifting slightly in the afternoon
Sea Conditions: pretty flat
Our first morning on board and still waking up about 5.30am. When we need to be up early, we’ll oversleep. I dived out to grab a coffee for Jon and I from the International Cafe on Deck 5 and took it back to the cabin. We opted for the civilised breakfast in the Da Vinci Dining Room. Callum and I had the special – Blueberry Pancakes (with Bacon) and Jon the other special – Smoked Salmon with scrambled eggs and hash browns.
Callum had his morning planned out at Kids Club so he was duly dropped off and Jon and I went to listen to the lecture. There was a Geologist on board and the first talk was on Glaciers. We then sat and had a coffee before picking Callum up for lunch. We decided to have a light lunch from the International Cafe – bit like the Costa on the P&O ships but they serve cakes, sandwiches and soup of a lunchtime – we just grabbed a sandwich each (and a couple of cakes!).
After lunch we explored the outside decks of the ship a little more – bit breezy!

Callum and Jon had a quick game of table tennis … until the ball ended up in the swimming pool! Meanwhile, the pool golf was going on. Three hula hoops in the swimming pool and people had to see if they could chip their golf balls into the hoops. Harder than it looked as the pool looked as though it had the wave machine switched on. We then found the shuffleboard which Callum enjoyed playing … and beating Mum and Dad!

Callum dropped back in Kids Club for an hour whilst Jon and I sat in One5 – a nightclub/bar area at the back of the ship. You could look out onto the wake, but there is an open deck area in front.
Back to the cabin and we started getting ready for dinner. Callum decided he wanted to join us for the Quiz but also wanted to do the Animal Trivia in Kids Club. That meant we needed to eat early in the main dining room. A short wait for dinner this evening – but the cocktail demonstrations kept us entertained. The barmen put on a show and invited a couple of members of the audience to help them shake. Their reward was the cocktail they’d just made.

We all had the Scallops Ceviche for starters, Jon and I the Lamb and Pearl Barley Soup whilst Callum went Kids menu and the Chicken Broth and Alphabet Pasta Soup. Main course I had the Red Snapper & Couscous, Callum the Bacon burger from the Kids Menu and Jon mistakenly went the Prime Rib but in spite of the waiter saying it was lean, it was very fatty. To make up for it, Jon and I had the Grand Marnier Souffle (lacking in orange flavour) and Callum the Loveboat Volcano Sundae.
Next stop, the quiz and we were sought out by Jane & Butch, the couple on the table next to us at last nights quiz! Different version tonight a Jeopardy style quiz with topics featuring Movies, Humans, Flags (thank goodness we had Callum with us) and Nautical. Just two questions wrong – The Godmother of the original Royal Princess (we were overruled – Queen Elizabeth in favour of our answer of Princess Diana). None of us knew the flag of Puerto Rico either. All the remaining answers were right – thank goodness Callum was with us as he was the only one that recognised the flags of The Philippines and New Zealand (we thought the flag had white stars but Callum was 100% certain!). We ended up with $6,700 to gamble on the final question. In for a penny (or a dollar) we gambled the lot. The question was “Apart from Titanic and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, which is the only other movie to win 11 Oscars”. Our guess was Ben Hur which was right. Now just waiting to see if anyone else did better than we did. They didn’t … so we won a bottle the Bubbly. Butch was really sweet and went to see the Quizmaster afterwards to say that Callum had won the quiz for us and could he have another prize. He duly obliged and Callum ended up with a keyring torch.
Final stop of the evening was going to be watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens as part of Movies under the Stars – the outdoor screen. It was pretty cold outside (the people with coats, hats and gloves had the right idea). the blankets weren’t too thick and Callum was freezing. We just grabbed a glass of wine and went back to the cabin … and Callum fell asleep straight away.
