Jon decided it was time to introduce Callum to the Rocky Horror Picture Show – it just so happened that Ore Oduba was starring as Brad! We had booked tickets for the earlier performance at the New Theatre Oxford. With the show not starting until 5.30pm, we had plenty of time beforehand for a little exploring.

Rather than drive and use the Park and Ride, we caught the train and it took just under an hour to get there. Going there, the train was packed – given what’s happened the last couple of years, it was quite reassuring in a way to see the train so busy.

There are several Treasure Trails in Oxford – we’ve done one which took us along the river and canal. This time we opted for one that took us around the City Centre itself – Oxford City & Castle. Luckily, we noticed that the trail came really close to a favourite stopping place of ours – Turf Tavern, so we opted for a little refreshment break part way around.

The trail took us around the lanes and the colleges in the centre of Oxford, past the Hertford Bridge (Bridge of Sighs – a skyway joining two parts of Hertford College over New College Lane) and the Radcliffe Camera before ending up at the Castle. Perfectly timed and we made it to Thaikhun with a minute or so to spare. We were lucky to get a table as the place was packed.

Callum surprised us and initially chose the Watermelon Refresher to drink (he really doesn’t like melon!) but as they were out of stock, he went for the super-dooper healthy, Avo-go-go. It was eeerrr, very green but he enjoyed it!

Food was really good – a selection of starters to share. Callum really wanted the Tom Yum Soup and ended up ordering a bowl between us. It was one of the nicest we have ever had. Callum went for the Hawker Crispy Chicken, Jon a Thai Green Curry and I had a Chilli and Cashew Nut Stir Fry. All really good.

The theatre was just down the road from the restaurant – even though rules had been relaxed a little, we had to show COVID passes to get into the theatre. We had seats for the front row of the Circle and had a pretty good view of the stage.

It was very different(!) to any show Callum had seen previously (not like Mamma Mia!!) but he really did enjoy (the soundtrack made the football training playlist in the car and was happily singing along to it!). More audience calling out than I remember and the narrator had his work cut out! People dressing up for the early show were in the minority – when we left the theatre to walk to the station, the queue was back along the road – and nearly everyone was dressed up and looked awesome!!
