We’d not been able to make it over to Cheltenham for their match against Barrow, so I persuaded Jon and Callum to go to Swindon to watch Barrow play here. Callum didn’t need much persuading as it was an opportunity to wear his new Barrow shirt complete with mini submarines – a nod to submarine building in Barrow. Jon would have been happy to give the match a miss.
Barrow had made a really good start to the season and hopes were high that they would be in the fight for promotion. Alas, by Christmas, they were midst of a losing streak and quickly slipping down the table. We were hopeful that they could turn things around today as Swindon were one of the few teams below us in the table.
Highlight of the journey there was driving across the Magic Roundabout. Callum had not seen anything like it. Five mini-roundabouts forming a larger roundabout. He admitted he wouldn’t have had a clue want to do – probably just drive across and hope for the best. In fairness, that’s probably what most people do!
Unsurprisingly, very few made it down to Swindon’s County Ground from Barrow itself – the majority of people were ex-Barrovians living somewhere in the south of England.

The Swindon hospitality was warm and welcoming – a separate room we could all congregate in for a pre-match bite to eat and drink.

Ninety-two Barrow fans made it to the match – and the less said about the match the better. The performance was dire. Final score: Swindon 2 – 0 Barrow

None of us were surprised when the manager had been sacked before we got home.
On the plus side, Callum managed to tick another football stadium off his list!
