Winchester: The Riflemans Museum

Jon had a day off work and wanted to head out for the day … but somewhere not to far away. It’s been a while since he visited The Riflemans Museum in Winchester so headed down south.

The Rifles Museum is located slightly further up the hill that the Tower and the Great Hall. It was a quiet day at the museum so we could take our time wandering around and not get in anyone’s way. An added bonus is that tickets are valid for a year so we can revisit at no additional cost.

The museum was really interesting. Being a massive fan of Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe books and television series, he was particularly interested in the Napoleonic Wars. The museum however, focussed on all eras of The Rifles – right up to modern day in Iraq and Afganistan.

One branch of my paternal line lived in Winchester for 20 or so years and Alfred Muddiman and several of his sons were in the army. I had half hoped to spot some information on the family but to no avail. However, there was a Book of Remembrance for The Kings Royal Rifle Corp holding the names of all Riflemen killed whilst serving. killed over the years, many in the two World Wars. The name of my Nan’s uncle, Herbert Lightbown, was recorded. He died in France towards the end of World War 1 on 23rd October 1918.

Afterwards, he walked through the grounds of the museum and the Peninsular Barracks and headed towards the Cathedral.

Time to find somewhere for lunch but not before a wander past the magnificent cathedral.

Several restaurants were closed as it was Monday, and after walking around sussing out the options, we settled on the The Giggling Squid. We’d eaten at the one in Bracknell previously and we weren’t overly impressed. This meal though was really lovely and so glad we tried this chain again.
