Monday 29th May

Weather: Overcast and Foggy at times
Seas: As flat as a pancake!

Room service woke us up this morning with coffee! Callum must have smelt the Pain au Chocolate as he came in not long after. He headed down the the Oriental restaurant for breakfast and were sat with an elderly gentleman and another couple. Very impressed with the gentleman on his own – he’d booked to do the rib ride in Bergen! We needed to look out for that. The weather was overcast when we woke up this morning, but over breakfast, the fog had really come down and the foghorn was sounding pretty loudly every 3 minutes of so.

After breakfast, Callum wanted to go to Kids Club – Arsenal Soccer School were doing a football school. Callum was proudly wearing his Reading Shirt – hopefully the match will be shown somewhere on the ship. Mum, Jon and I went to the Food Talk hosted by Benne. Not as much banter with this bunch of chefs as we’d been entertained by on previous cruises.  the food they cooked did look lovely.

Must admit we were a little disappointed that Nashta wouldn’t be available this cruise – we’d really enjoyed this on previous cruises and was hoping to introduce Mum to this.

Coffee time and the atrium was heaving. Line Dancing was going on and loads of people taking part and even more watching! All seats taken so we took our coffees back up to Malabar and sat there whilst the orientation briefing was taking place. Another Reading fan asked if the match was being shown … if the match was only being shown on Sky, then alas no, it wouldn’t be shown. Looks as though we’d need to follow the match via Sky Sports News in the cabin.

For lunch we headed to the Glass House with Mum (for the first time this cruise!!) – alas no free tasters as there had been on Aurora last September. We all chose the tasting plates with the exception of Callum who chose the Sliders!

After lunch, there was just enough time for a quick game of shuffleboard (Jon won) before a late afternoon kick-off  and time to chill and tune into Sky Sports News. The one slight downside with this holiday was that we missed out on going to Wembley – hopefully David and Tom would have a great time.

First half sounded a bit dire, but Reading pulled things back in the second half. Extra time and so far so good. If the penalty shootout stopped after three rounds, everything would be great … but alas, it was best of five and Reading failed to net the last two goals. Well done Huddersfield, unlucky Reading, but in fairness, everyone raised eyebrows at the appointment of Jaap Stam … so what an achievement to finish 3rd in the Division.

We’d also managed to pass the shop at some point today.  Callum discovered there is a limited edition of Haribo on sale on P&O!!

Formal night tonight so we all got dressed up and popped down to the Glass House for Pre-Dinner Drinks (we skipped the captains welcome!). Seats at the Bar in the Glass House suited mum and she surprised us as she loved the ambience of the Glass House as much as we did. Drinks ordered – glass of Canadian Peller Ice for me, Prosecco for Mum, Jon was working his way through the wine-list so a large glass of whatever, and Callum opted for a mocktail.
