Today Jon was collecting his new car so we trundled over to Hungerford.  First off, bacon butties at Cobbs Farm before handing back the old car for a new shiny version!  Jon wanted an excuse for a drive to get used to the new car so we continued down the A4 through Hungerford to see what we could find on the National Trust / English Heritage front.

First stop was at Silbury Hill – a prehistoric artificial chalk mound near Avebury in the English county of Wiltshire. It is part of the Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites UNESCO World Heritage Site

From here we drove a little further on to Avebury itself to visit the Stone Circles.  Built and much altered during the Neolithic period, roughly between 2850 BC and 2200 BC, the henge survives as a huge circular bank and ditch, encircling an area that includes part of Avebury village. Within the henge is the largest stone circle in Britain – originally of about 100 stones – which in turn encloses two smaller stone circles.

A good run out, and must get to Stonehenge for a visit soon.
