Winchester – Great Hall

An unexpected trip to Winchester today.  Ron was over from the US and Jon went down to catch up with him and Mark.  It must have been a good night as Jon left his phone there!  Plans abandoned to go to Southampton and mission “Rescue Phone” was put into operation!

We decided to catch the train rather than drive and figure out the car parks.  All pretty straight forward!  Thatcham to Reading then onto Winchester.

We had a wander around the outside of the Cathedral before meeting up with Ron and Mark for lunch in The Old Vine which overlooks the Cathedral and grounds.  Lovely lunch, great catch up and a teeny bit of mickey taking at Jon’s expense!

At Mark’s recommendation, we visited the Great Hall and Round Table – we hadn’t previously been here before. It’s a very impressive Medieval Hall with huge Round Table.  The stained glass windows were impressive with monarchs and other notables permanently recorded.

Whilst heading back to the station, we noticed the Tower at the top of the High Street was open so decided to have a wander in.  It’s been closed when we’ve previously been to Winchester.  It was actually a small museum (Westgate Museum) and the lady on the desk was incredibly helpful and knowledgable.  It was free to get in; we just paid for a worksheet for Callum to complete.

The views from the top of the tower down onto the High Street were pretty impressive.

All in all, a lovely day out … even though it didn’t go to plan!SaveSave
