A morning out with Mum to Welford Park – a place Dad loved to visit whilst the snowdrops were out.
Great British Bake-off excepted (you can still see the outline of where the marquee stood on the grass!), the grounds of Welford Park are only open for 4-5 weeks in spring as they have the most amazing display of snowdrops.

Each year, they make little improvements – this year they have made a path from the car park through woodland to a crossing point opposite the main gate. They even had two lollipop men to stop the traffic! Parts of the old Lambourn Valley Railway (a line that ran from Newbury to Lambourn with a stop at Welford Park) were visible with old bolts, rotting sleepers and metal stands intermingling with the undergrowth.
The ground was pretty wet underfoot, but the grounds people take good care of the paths. If things get a little wet underfoot, they add more wood chippings and mulch so you don’t end up too muddy. Walking boots or wellies are recommended though.
We walked from the house to the old bridge, passing patches of snowdrops and aconites. You cross the bridge at the end and you are in the main display. It’s pretty much a circular walk with the centerpiece fenced off and polite signs asking you to stick to the paths so you don’t step on the bulbs. Even though we thought we were quite early in the season, quite a lot of snow drops were passed their best but it is still an impressive display and well worth a visit.
