Southampton – Zany Zebra Trail

Marwell Zoo were hosting another trail in Southampton following the success of the Go Rhino trail three years ago.  This year, it was the turn of the Zany Zebra Trail.  This was one we couldn’t miss as Zebras have always been Callum’s favourite animal … and collects them!

Kian was keeping Callum company for the day so we decided to head to Southampton to see how many we could tick off in one day.  There were 198 zebras in total – some at Marwell Zoo – 47 large zebras and 100+ smaller zebras adopted and decorated by the schools.

We decided to park at WestQuay Shopping Centre as this would be fairly central for the trail.  We were pleasantly surprised to find out that parking all day would cost just £5.  We past our first zebra on the way into the car park as it was outside Carnival HQ … and there were two more zebra in the shopping centre itself.

There was a large display of Schools Zebras in the Marlands Centre … including Fredericks that were selling edible Zebra Poo.  Naturally, the boys couldn’t resist (marshmallows covered in chocolate and sprinkles!) and declared it yummy!

The morning was spent wandering around the town and through the parks until we decided to stop for lunch.  Callum is a bit of a MasterChef fan and when we found that one of the winners, Shelina, had opened a Street Food Cafe, Lakaz Maman, in Southampton, we decided to try there for lunch.

Callum was adamant he wanted starters so we chose a couple for us all to share.  Callum chose a pulled pork burger, I had a prawn and mango wrap and Kian the chicken curry.  All really good.  The good lady herself was in the cafe (in a meeting) and her MasterChef trophy on display at the back.  Great food and very reasonably priced (especially from the kitchen of the Masterchef Champion!).

After lunch we hit the library to find the 20+ zebras there and Sea City before walking down to the sea front to find our last zebras for the day before heading home.

In total, we found 141 Zany Zebras (142 as one of the codes didn’t register!) and sadly two zebras were in the Vets – they had been vandalised so were in need of repair.  We saw the plinths of Zeeberry and CrissCross but not the zebras themselves.

A few favourites from today ..

The boys did fantastically well finding so many zebra in one day.  Fantastic trail – thank you to all the organisers and hope you raise lots of money for the Grevy Zebra Conservation.
