One place we’ve been meaning to stop to explore for the last 20 years is Durham. It’s only about a 15 minute drive from Newcastle but in all our travels to the North East, we’ve never got around to stopping off before.
With staying in Newcastle over the weekend, we decided to hop on the train from Newcastle and take the 10 minute trip down to Durham – a little over £10 in rail fares for the three of us.
We arrived at the station and it was pretty apparent we would be walking up and down hills all day! It was downhill to reach the main part of the town, then the old part of the Town, Castle and Cathedral was on top of another hill.
We resorted to an old favourite when it comes to exploring new places – Treasure Trails – and chose one of the five trails available – Durham City Treasure.
We started at the edge of the city and quickly made our way onto the path running alongside the river, then doubling back on ourselves along some lanes, all the while solving clues. We made our way back to the river again, thinking we’d now start exploring the city, but no, this time we were wandering along the other river bank before heading towards College Green and the very impressive Cathedral. It was only once we’d left Durham, we realised we hadn’t seen or explored the Castle.
