13th – 16th August 2021

After a couple of days in North Yorkshire and Hartlepool, we arrived in Newcastle to see family and friends.

With the Premier Inn and other cheaper hotels fully booked, we ended up at the Hilton at Newcastle-Gateshead (deal via Expedia), with great views overlooking the Tyne Bridge, especially at night. A lovely hotel albeit with drinks at typical city prices.

On way to the hotel, we stopped by to see a couple of Jon’s aunts and a cousin – lovely to catch up with them all.

First night, we wandered around the Quayside to find somewhere to eat and we ended up in The Head of Steam. A great selection of burgers and pizzas. Callum a little disappointed that pool table was out of action!

Afterwards, we headed up to the Millennium Bridge and back along the other side to reach the hotel.

Saturday evening, we met up with another two friends and hit the Quayside. Unsure how busy it would get on a Saturday night (bearing in mind we had a teenager in tow!) – there were plenty of Hen Do’s out in force (and a couple of Stag Do’s) but it wasn’t as busy as we’d thought. We ended up back in The Head of Steam for a meal.

On Sunday, we caught the train into Durham (see separate post) and in the evening, we had booked a table at the newly opened Hard Rock Cafe. It was in a great position, right under the Tyne Bridge. Callum enjoyed his milkshake and burger!

South Shields

On the Saturday we caught the Metro to South Shields – we were meeting up with friends and their children at Coleman’s, a seafood restaurant by the beach. Food was really lovely and great to catch up. No room for ice-cream from Minchella’s this visit; too full.

Callum reunited with one of the Snowdogs that was now located at Newcastle Metro Station.

South Shields was home of the first purpose-designed lifeboat – “Tyne” was one of these original lifeboats. The ‘Tyne’ served South Shields for more than 60 years and saved 1,028 lives.
