Thursday 10th March 2022
The match that we were meant to see on 2nd January was rescheduled for a Thursday evening in March. Thankfully we were free to go and see this.

We left in plenty of time (or so we thought!) – making good progress down the A34 until everything ground to a halt. A car was on fire just up ahead. We sat without moving for 30 minutes or so. Thankfully, the A303 junction was just up ahead. With police on the scene letting traffic off at this junction and turning cars around that had gone past this junction, we were soon on our way via the scenic route. Two minutes earlier, we would have gone past the junction – two minutes later, we would have been held up a lot longer and may not have got to the game in time.
We picked our way around Andover and eventually picked the A34 back up just beyond the incident.
It did mean we had no time to grab a bite to eat before the match and just had to make our way straight there. We parked the car at West Quay and walked the mile or so to the stadium. You could hear the Newcastle fans a mile off! We did make it in time and had to settle for a stadium pie!!
Our seats were up in the gods – a case of crossing your legs until the end of the match – a steep climb and just as well none of us suffered from vertigo!!
As always, the Newcastle fans sang their hearts out and silenced the Southampton crowd. Over 3000 Newcastle fans made it to the match – not bad at all for a mid-week match.

As usual, Newcastle got off to a slow start and Southampton took the lead. Not for long as Chris Woods found the net. New star signing Bruno GuimarĂ£es (he’s already got his own song!) scored a fabulous first goal in a Newcastle shirt. Southampton very unlucky not to grab another goal or two towards the end, but it was great to see a Newcastle win.
Newcastle fans were held back from leaving the stadium at the end, but the players came over to thank the fans and listed to another rendition of the Bruno song.

Heading home much quicker – by the time we walked back to West Quay a lot of the traffic had gone – just a slight delay at traffic lights on the main road but once we were past that, we sailed home very easily.
