Charles Muddiman
1842 – 1908
2nd Great-Grandfather
1842 – Birth of Charles Muddiman

Muddiman (also Muddyman, Muddeman etc).
Charles Muddyman was born on 30th July 1842 at Dallam Lane in Warrington. He was the oldest child of Charles Muddiman and Mary Sackerson.
To date, we’ve not been able to find any record of the marriage of Charles & Mary. If we’ve found the right entry in the 1841 Census, they were already married.
Charles occupation is down as Butler on the Birth Cert (servant on baptism record). At the time of the 1841 Census, Charles was working as a Butler at Lymm Hall.

(More photos in the newspaper article)
He was baptised at St Pauls, Warrington on 28th August 1842.

1843 – Birth of brother, Alfred Muddiman
Alfred Muddiman was born in 1844 and baptised at Lymm Parish Church on 4th August 1844. As a child, he lived in Kettering, Northamptonshire with his uncle on his mothers side (bonus as this side of the family are proving very tricky to research!)
He enlisted in 1862 in Rifle Brigade. We lost track of him at the time of the 1871 and 1881 Census but from looking at birth places of their children in later census, Alfred was in Ireland at the time of the 1881 Census.
The family ended up living in Winchester (home to the Rifle Brigade).
Alfred married Kate Burgess at St Maurice in Winchester in 1874 and they had 16 children together. Several children followed in Alfred’s footsteps and also enlisted in the army.

Maria passed away in 1928 and Charles Alfred passed away in 1939. There’s a possibility that Charles remarried in 1929.
1899 – Marriage of Son, John Wilson Muddiman
John Wilson Muddiman somehow ended up in Northwich, Cheshire (abt 30 miles from Ashton-under-Lyne) where he met his future wife, Elizabeth Ann Hodkinson. Elizabeth’s father had a small holding as well as the pub so he may have ended up working for the family – or for one of their neighbours.
Just after James Hodkinson’s death, they left Northwich and ended up in Barrow-in-Furness. Elizabeth fell pregnant just before her father’s death and their first child was born in September 1899.

John Wilson Muddiman and Elizabeth Ann Hodkinson married at St Marks Church, Barrow-in-Furness on 1st July 1899.
They had four children
- James Muddiman (1899 – 1977)

1902 – Industrial Accident

In 1902, Charles was involved in a working accident that resulted in a permanent disability.
At the Ashton-under-Lyne Powerloom Overlookers Association Gathering on Saturday 11th October 1902, Charles was awarded a £50 grant from the General Union as a result. The accident happened a few months prior.
This payout only happened as he was a member of the trades union and with the money received, Charles hoped he would be able to “jog along in comfort at some suitable business” and encouraged the youngsters to join the union as it was their friend in health and their friend in sickness or misfortune.
1908 – Death of Charles Muddiman

Charles Muddiman died at 6 Waterloo Street, Dukinfield towards the end of June 1908 aged 65. He was buried at St Michaels & All Saints on 29th June 1908.
Ellen after Charles

It looks as though Ellen had it rather tough following Charles death. At the time of the 1911 and 1921 census, she was living at St Michaels – The Union Workhouse in Ashton-under-Lyne. She was working as a weaver.

Ellen passed away aged 81 at Lake Hospital on 29th August 1924. Her daughter-in-law, Maria Muddiman, of 2 Garden Walk, Hurst, Ashton-under-Lyne registered her death. She was buried at St Michael and All Saints on 3rd September 1924. At the time of the 1921 Census, 2 Garden Walk was the home of Charles Alfred and Maria Muddiman; it looks as though Ellen lived with Charles and his family towards the end of her life.
