George Holford
1815 – 1875
3rd Great-Grandfather


George Holford was the oldest of James Holford and Rebecca Beckett’s 3 children. James and Rebecca were married at St Mary & All Saints, Great Budworth on 16th May 1814. George was baptised at St Mary & All Saints, Great Budworth on 19th March 1815.

George married Sarah Rowe at St Mary & All Saints, Great Budworth on 29th December 1842, a ceremony witnessed by Charles Rowe & Thomas Gough. Sarah was the daughter of John Rowe and Betty Holland.

1817 – Birth & Death of Brother, James Holford

James Holford was born in 1817 and baptised at Great Budworth on 22nd June 1817.

James died on 22nd July 1820 aged just 3 years old from scalding and was buried in Witton cemetery on 25th July 1820.


1820 – Birth & Death of Sister, Ann Holford

Ann Holford was born in 1820 and died aged just 1 year old on 2nd November 1821.

She was buried in Witton Cemetery on 4th November 1821.

1842 – Marriage of George Holford & Sarah Rowe

George Holford married Sarah Rowe at St Mary & All Saints, Great Budworth on 29th December 1842 and witnessed by Charles Rowe & Thomas Gough.

1843 – Death of Mother, Rebecca Holford

Rebecca Holford (nee Beckett) died in Barnton on 2nd May 1843 aged 64. Her death was registered by her husband, James Holford.

She was buried at St Helens, Northwich on 5th May.

St Helens kept an Auxiliary burial register which stated Rebecca’s parents were Ambrose and Mary Beckett from Ightfield in Shropshire.

1846 – Birth of Ann Holford

The oldest of the Holford children was Ann, born on 21st August 1846 in Wincham. She was baptised at Great Budworth on 6th September 1846.

Marriage Cert: James Hodkinson to Ann Holford

Ann married James Hodkinson on 14th October 1864 and they had 6 children together:

  • James George Hodkinson (1870 – 1905)
  • Mary Hodkinson (1872 – )
  • Sarah Hodkinson (1875 – 1953)
  • John Hodkinson (1879 – )
  • Elizabeth Ann Hodkinson (1881 – 1961)
  • Harriet Hodkinson (1885 – 1972)

We’ve been incredibly lucky that the birth dates of the Holford children and first few grandchildren were recorded on a piece of paper kept inside the family bible. It also confirms that Rebecca Holford was Mary’s daughter, not the daughter of George & Sarah.

1847 – Death of Father, James Holford

James Holford died on 17th January 1847 in Barnton aged 68 years of age. cause of death was Dropsy (10 weeks).

His death was registered by his son, George Holford. James was buried at St Helens, Northwich.

St Helens kept an Auxillary burial register but alas no details of his parents were listed.

1849 – Birth of Elizabeth Holford

Elizabeth Holford was born on 26th January 1849 and baptised at Great Budworth on 4th March 1849.

Elizabeth married Samuel Davies on 2nd August 1868 at St Mary, St Denys and St George, Manchester.

They had 9 children together:

1853 – Birth of Charles Holford

Charles Holford was born on 12th February 1853 and baptised at Great Budworth on 13th March 1849.

He married widower Mary Ann Higginson (nee Harrison) and it doesn’t look as though they had any children alive at the time the census was taken.

Charles died in 1918.

1855 – Birth of Mary Holford

Mary Holford was born on 3rd October 1855 and baptised at Great Budworth on 4th November 1855.

Mary gave birth to a daughter, Rebecca Holford on 4th Feb 1874 and her birth was included on the sheet of paper tucked inside the Holford Bible. Rebecca’s father is not known.

Mary married Richard Allen on 12th March 1882 at Christ Church, Barnton on the same day that brother James Holford married Sarah Allen (Richard’s sister).

Mary had at least six more children wth Richard.

1857 – Birth of James Holford

James Holford was born on 10th November 1857 and baptised at Lostock Gralam on 29th November 1857.

James married Sarah Allen on 12th March 1882 at Christ Church, Barnton on the same day that sister Mary married Richard Allen (Sarah’s brother).

James & Sarah had 4 children together:

  • Lucy Holford (1883 – )
  • George Holford (1886 – )
  • William Holford (1888 – )
  • Sarah Holford (1890 – )

James died on 6th November 1925 just a couple of days before his 68th Birthday. Sarah passed away the following year.

James’ son, George, and wife Eveline are also interred into the same grave.

1860 – Birth of Sarah Holford

Sarah Holford was born on 3rd March 1860 and baptised at Great Budworth on 1st April 1860.

She married Clement Melbourne on 28th April 1876 shortly after her 16th Birthday. She was married by Licence – small white lie as she said she was 17 years old.

Clement and Sarah had 13 children together, although several died in infancy:

Sarah Melbourne died in Widnes on 18th December 1927; Clement passed away the year before.

1861 – In Police Court as a Witness

On Saturday 29th June 1861, George was summoned to Police court to give evidence against two people accused of stealing earthenware from the wharf at Anderton.

George was a nightwatchman working that night.

1862 – Birth of George Holford

George Holford was born on 16th July 1862 and baptised at Great Budworth on 31st August 1862.

He married Olive Brandreth Hughes at St Annes in Newton Heath, Manchester on 23rd February 1884.

It does not appear George & Olive had any children that we could find.

George died in Northwich in 1926 and Olive in 1923

1864 – Birth of Alice Rebekah Holford

Alice Rebekah Holford was born on 28th February 1864 at in Wincham. She was baptised at Great Budworth on 27th March 1864.

She married Robert Ernest Yarwood at St Helens, Northwich on 17th February 1891. They had four children together:

  • Robert Yarwood (1892 – 1976)
  • Polly Yarwood (1894 – 1978)
  • Vincent Yarwood (1895 – 1979)
  • Ernest Yarwood (1897 – 1918)

Alice Rebekah died in 1916 and Robert Ernest passed away the following year.

1868 – Birth of Samuel Holford

The youngest of all the Holford siblings was born in Wincham on 28th May 1868 and baptised at Lostock Gralam on 14th June 1868.

Samuel married Catherine Wilkinson on 6th February 1895 at Great Budworth.

They had at least 5 children together:

  • Robert Holford (1895 – 1962)
  • Frank Holford (1898 – 1974)
  • Sarah Elizabeth Holford (1901 – 1980)
  • Fred Holford (1903 – 1976)
  • Herbert Holford (1907 – 1988)

Samuel died at his home in Thornton le Fylde on 12th September 1937 and Catherine passed away in 1942.

1875 – Death of George Holford

George died on 10th February 1875 in Wincham aged 59 years of age. His cause of death was Heart Disease and his death was registered by his eldest daughter, Ann Hodkinson. He was buried at Witton Cemetery on 12th February 1875.

Northwich Guardian – 13th February 1875

He was buried at St Helens in Northwich on 12th February 1875.


Life after George

After George’s death, Sarah continued to live in Wincham until her death in 1897.

1891 – Death of wife, Sarah Holford

Sarah Holford died aged 69 on 18th January 1891 from Bronchitis. Her death was registered by her daughter Mary who appeared to have come back home whilst her mother was ill.

She was laid to rest at St Helen’s, Witton on 20th January 1891.
