William Southway

1822 – 1905
3rd Great-Grandfather

William Southway (various slight spelling variations including Southey) was the second born son of James Southway and Elizabeth Filer.

He was born in Wells, Somerset in 1821/2 and baptised on 11th January at St Mary, West Harptree.

From looking at where his siblings were born, the family seemed to live in West Harptree between 1820 – 1835 although a couple of children were born in nearby Wells (they still baptised in West Harptree).

William married Esther (Hester) Williams in 1848 and together they had 10 children. They lived in the Cumberland Road area of Clifton all their married life. They would have seen the Clifton Suspension Bridge being built (just around the corner!) as this opened in 1864.

By all accounts, the family remained close with William’s siblings living close by; several of his children also appear to have enjoyed a close relationship with several moving away from Clifton and ending up in a different city, living close by.

William and Esther ended up having at least 57 grandchildren although several died in infancy.

Esther died in 1901 and William passed away in 1905. At the time, it looks as though they were living and being looked after by their daughter, Emma Jemima, registered both their deaths.

1847 – Birth of son, William Southway

It looks as though William & Esther had a son just before they married in 1848.

William Southway was born in 1847 and baptised at St Andrew’s in Clifton on the same day as two of his cousins; Eliza Ann (daughter of James & Elizabeth Southway) and William Charles Davis (son of Charles and Ann Davis).

It looks as though William died in 1848.

1848 – Marriage of William Southway & Esther Williams

William Southway married Hester (Esther) Jane Williams on 11th June 1848 at The Parish Church in Bedminster.

It was witnessed by James Southway and Benjamin John Room(?).

Likely the Parish Church of Bedminster was St John’s Parish Church. It was blitzed during the was and demolished in 1967.

1849 – Birth of son, William Jacob Southway

William Jacob Southway was born early in 1849 in Black Horse Lane, Clifton. He was baptised on 19th May 1849 at St Andrew, Clifton.

On 16 Jan 1869, he married Catherine Morisey at St Andrew, a ceremony witnessed by Esther Southway (X) and J M Clay.

They had three children together:

  • Isabella Southway (1870 – 1927)
  • Louisa Southway (1871 – )
  • Baby Southway (1873 – 1897)

Tragically, William Jacob died on 21 March 1881 when he was involved in an accident and drowned.

She married John Hoare Satterley on 12th September 1869 at St Andrew – a ceremony witnessed by sister, Mary Ann Satterley, and William Andrews (X).

Ann Maria and John Satterley had 11 children together:

  • William John Satterley (1870 – 1898)
  • Ada Annie Satterley (1872 – 1942)
  • Bertha Satterley (1874 – 1878)
  • George Henry Satterley (1877 – 1944)
  • Bertha Agnes Satterley (1880 – 1880)
  • Francis Albert Satterley (1881 – 1883)
  • Richard James Satterley (1884 – 1939)
  • Rose Anne Louise Satterley (1886 – 1960)
  • Albert Frederick Walter Satterley (1889 – )
  • Charles Edward Satterley (1892 – 1898)
  • Florence Mary Agnes Satterley (1897 – 1991)

In the late 1870s, the family moved to Liverpool and were joined 20 or so years later by Louisa Southway and her family. In 1901, the families were both living on Nursery Street – Ann at number 10 and Louisa at number 2.

Ann Maria died on 28th June 1918 and her husband passed away on 2nd March 1923. Both were buried at Anfield Cemetery along with their daughter Rose Ann Louise and grand-daughter Florence.

1855 – Birth of daughter, Charlotte Southway

Charlotte Southway was born 1855 and baptised at St Andrew, Clifton on 14 January 1855.

She married Charles Barron on 3rd August 1891 and they had 10 children together.

  • Charles Edward Barron (1889 – )
  • Louisa Barron (1892 – )
  • Charles Edward Barron (1893 – )
  • Albert Edward Barron (1896 – 1896)
  • Elizabeth Ellen Barron (1896 – 1896)
  • David Barron (1898 – 1899)
  • Elizabeth Ellen Barron (1898 – 1899)
  • Gladys Barron (1905 – )
  • two more who died in infancy

Charlotte and Charles spent their married lives moving around England, appearing in Liverpool (1891), Ludlow in Shropshire (1901) and Landport in Hampshire (1911). From where their children were born, we also know they lived near Todmorden and Skipton in Yorkshire before moving back to Bristol by the time of the 1921 Census.

Charlotte died in Bristol in 1922.

1857 – Birth of daughter, Louisa Southway

Louisa Southway was born on 20 October 1857 at Bennett’s Court in Clifton.

Louisa was baptised at St Andrew, Clifton on 29th November 1859 along side three of her cousins.

St Andrews, Clifton – looks as though the church was hit in World War 2 and later demolished.

Louisa met her future husband in Clifton, when the Jackson family moved close by for a short while whilst working on the railways. When the Jackson family moved up to Barrow-in-Furness, she moved with them.

She married John Jackson on 22nd June 1874 at St George, Barrow in Furness. Witnesses were John’s sister, Sarah Ann Jackson, and John Satterley (who married Louisa’s older sister, Anna Maria).

John and Louisa had seven children:

  • Jane Louisa Jackson (1875 – )
  • John George Jackson (1879 – 1915)
  • Sarah Ann Jackson (1881 – 1887)
  • Susannah Jackson (1881 – 1882)
  • James William Jackson (1887 – 1948)
  • Bertha Jackson (1891 – 1956)
  • Ada (Louisa) Jackson (1894 – 1953)

At some point in the mid-late 1890’s, John, Louisa, James William and Ada moved down to Liverpool; at the time of the 1901 census, Bertha remained in Barrow with brother, John George, and his new wife Ellen. She also moved down to Liverpool by the time of the 1911 census. Louisa’s sister, Anna Maria, husband John Satterley and family also moved to Liverpool and were living a couple of doors down the road.

Everton / Kirkdale became their home. Dad and Uncle Ronnie had told us that the Liverpool side of the family were all killed during WW2 when the family house took a direct hit. However, whilst it looks as though the street Bertha lived on (Vesuvius Street) was hit by a bomb, all the family looks to have survived.

Louisa Jackson died in 1920 and husband John, passed away on 31st December 1937. John was buried in a public grave at Anfield Cemetery on 4th February 1937.

1860 – Birth of daughter, Agnes Melinda Southway

Agnes Melinda Southway was born in 1860. She married Thomas Picket Hayes in 1877 in Hennlys, Monmouthshire.

It was reported in the papers that they had 11 children together.

  • Thomas William Hayes (1878 – )
  • John Pincket Hayes (1880 – )
  • Elizabeth Jane Hayes (1883 – )
  • Bertha Hayes (1885 – 1885)
  • Susana Hayes (1886 – )
  • Albert Edward Hayes (1887 – )
  • Agnes Melinda Hayes (1890 – )
  • Susan Hayes (1891 – )
  • George Henry Hayes (1896 – )
  • Henry Hayes (1899 – 1899)
  • plus one more child who died as a baby

Agnes was perhaps the black sheep of the family as she appears to have lived a colourful life, having a couple of run-in’s with the law and appearing in courts.

In 1899, Agnes was charged, but found not guilty of manslaughter of her baby son, Henry. During his short life, various agencies inspected the home and raised concerns that Henry was being neglected. On one visit, he was found so emaciated, they took him into the workhouse to look after him. He eventually fell into a coma and died which is when Agnes was charged with his manslaughter.

  • Mervyn Alec Melksham (1896 – 1946)

After Henry’s (husbands) death, she married Hugh Leonard in 1928.

Bertha died on 1st June 1945 at The Snowden Building in Bristol. Just prior to her death, she was living at the Gloucester Hotel, 300 Hotwells Road, Bristol with her youngest son, Mervyn Alec. He was a Licensed Victualler so may have ran the bar at the hotel.
