Heading Home

All alarms turned off this morning … but we were all awake by 7.15am!!  Packing finished, we headed down for breakfast then checked out of the hotel (boo hoo!).

Our room at the Radisson Blu Waterfront was fab – very spacious for the three of us.  A living area with bed settee that converted into a double bed for Callum.  A separate bedroom with King Size bed and a large bathroom with double sinks, bath and spacious shower cubicle.  In addition, we had a balcony and our room looked out over the marina and the V&A Waterfront in the distance.  To our left was the sea, and to the right you could see a quarter of Table Mountain.

Great breakfast on offer, Tobagos was fab as a restaurant and the bar with bar staff that got to know you really quickly.  The guys on the door were amazing and so friendly.  Lots of banter when Callum wore his Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates football shirts and they always had a beaming smile and welcome.  For us, it was a perfect place to stay – thank you!

We headed into the Waterfront for the final time – a last tour of the shops to ensure we hadn’t forgot anything.  As much as he wanted to, we couldn’t fit the life-size zebra into our suitcase.  Zeb and Zebbie had managed to persuade some more friends to come home with us!

We also went back to Quay 4 for our final lunch.  Shrimp starters all round, Jon and Callum had the same as yesterday whilst I went for the KingKlip and salad.

We headed back to hotel to wait for our car to take us to the hotel.  Table Mountain looked fantastic once again, overlooking Cape Town.  We were some of the first to check in for the flight and much to Callum’s delight, we headed to the BA lounge!!

Before too long, it was time to head to the gate and board the plane.  We would board early, thanks to Jon’s Silver card and with hand luggage safely stowed, we settled down.  Just when we thought we were about push back, the Captain announced there were a couple of problems and would explain later.

Shortly after, the Chief Purser came and spoke to a passenger just ahead of us.  Trying not to be too nosey, it appeared the crew weren’t happy to have him onboard as he’d been drinking and was asked to leave the flight.  He refused and calmly spoke with the purser, stating his case whilst his suitcase was being taken off the flight.  Eventually four police officers came on board to escort him off the plane.  Now we could take off, but the flight was an hour late leaving.   Jon was “resting his eyes” whilst all this was going on!

Callum didn’t want any tea (still full after his huge breakfast and lunch) and fell asleep really quickly, shortly followed by Jon after he’d finished his tea.

Whilst Jon has been to South Africa before, this was Callum’s and my first trip and we loved it … an extra couple of days (and timing our visit so we could go up Table Mountain) would have been perfect.  I am sure we will be back … with a trip up Table Mountain, into Downtown Cape Town and across to Robben Island.  Fingers crossed, we could also then squeeze in a visit to the Stellenbosch Winelands too.

P.S. Note for next trip to South Africa ... if Callum is still under 18, even if we are traveling with Jon, we still need the certified copy of the unabridged birth certificate with us as we were asked for it – twice – to get out of the country!
