Oxford: Evening with Brian Cox

Read Time:2 Minute, 4 Second

Late last year, we were watching QI and the legend that is Professor Brian Cox was one of the guests. Like his fellow panelists, our minds were blown with his scientific knowledge and theories. When Jon found out he was on tour and stopping in Oxford, we booked tickets. We were late booking so were up in the gods and kept our fingers crossed we would be able to follow what he was talking about!

We’d used the Park & Ride to get into town – the stop was on the road the theatre was in. First up, we needed a bite to eat and returned to Thaikhun – a Thai restaurant a couple of doors down from theatre where we’d eaten previously. We only realised as walking to the restaurant, there were about another four Thai restaurants on this street alone!

Thankfully, they had a table for us and we decided to just jump in for mains as we didn’t have a huge amount of time before the show started. Callum opted for the Southern Style Chicken. Not sure if he didn’t notice the 4 x chillis by this item … the serving staff didn’t make any comment about how hot the dish was when he ordered. It lived up to the 4 chilli symbol.

Callum was determined to clear his plate … and he did although it did take a while for his mouth to cool down.

We then found our seats in the theatre ready for the show: Brian Cox: Horizons. We were up in the gods but still had a good view of all the stage.

The show was unlike anything we’d seen before. He just stood and talked for nearly 2 hours with some photos and videos showing behind him. We will have forgotten all of it in a few days. Jon enjoyed he statement that just by existing my body is currently giving off a waterfall of proton energy, and bending the space-time fabric. We are all irrelevant yet hugely important.

Black holes – apparently they are just an imprint in space of what was there, and they appear doughnut shaped. Should I approach the event horizon I will appear to stand still in time, but I will still be moving towards it. Time moves at different rates at different locations. Jon’s brain explodes at this point !

Not everyone enjoyed the show. The couple behind us left at the interval and there were a few more empty seats in the stalls too!
