We’d been wanting to do one of the Hidden London tours of the Underground for a while now. However, Callum needed to be 14 to come with us (and he really wanted to!) … then trying to book and COVID got in the way.

Jon had managed to book us onto the Charing Cross: Access All Areas tour.

Explore the disused spaces of Charing Cross Underground station, go behind closed doors to exclusive areas not accessible to the public, walk under Trafalgar Square and see the London Underground in a different light.

Closed to the public since 1999, the Jubilee line platforms at Charing Cross are now synonymous with movies and TV. Explore the station’s history and find out how it became to be used as a filming location for popular TV shows such as Killing Eve as well as blockbuster films like the Bond hit Skyfall and even Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World.

Hidden London

We were taken onto the old disused platforms that are now used as film sets. The advertising posters on tube line changes according to whatever they are filming. They took us through secret doorways and into the ventilation ducts … and could peer down through the grills onto the platforms below. You felt the rush of air as trains came into and left the stations.

Best of all, we were taken through the very metal grill James Bond disappears through in the film Skyfall. The one where he’s trying to catch the baddie. At the end of the ventilation duct was the ventilation shaft – hidden away from street view up top, presumably to stop the daredevils climbing in.

We walked underneath Trafalgar Square … I was old enough to remember the old Trafalgar Square tube station!
