Sea: Calm
Weather: HOT, HOT, HOT
This was our second visit to Dubrovnik on a cruise – the last time was in 2012 (Callum has grown a little since!). Last time it was raining, this visit the sun was shining brightly. We got off the ship pretty quickly as wanted to get back on board before it got too hot. It was meant to be one of the hottest days of the cruise.
We walked the city walls on our last visit which we all loved (even through we walking the wrong way round with everyone else!). This time we were exploring the city itself. It’s a fabulous city. A lot of Game of Thrones was filmed in and around the city – Jon was on the look-out for settings from the series – it’s one he watched avidly when it was released.
The city was a 20 minute coach ride from the port and we were dropped off just outside the city walls.
It was only 10am and temperatures were rising quickly and nothing else for it but to sit down in the shade for an ice cream.
We decided to take a boat ride out around the harbour as it would be a little cooler than staying in the walled city. It’s not something we’d done before and would see the city walls from a different view point.
We struck lucky – we had the little boat to ourselves.
The boat trip was an inspired choice. The boat headed out of the harbour and followed the city walls. You really got to appreciate their size. The boat then crossed over and circled an island just off the city and it’s rugged coastline had several points where boats could dock and head off to explore the island. The further we went around the island, several very large and expensive looking yachts came into view. Wonder if any celebs were onboard.
The last leg back to the harbour took us past a little grotto used by hotel guests. The sea here changed colour to a lovely shade of turquoise.
Back to the harbour and we made our way back through the town to the shuttle bus stop to head back to the ship. Jon and Callum changed into their Newcastle shirts – another big match today as they were playing Liverpool. We then headed down to the Glass House for a late lunch.
We were in Brodies to watch the match this afernoon. Newcastle took the lead thanks to an Anthony Gordon goal in the 25th minute. Three minutes later, Liverpool had a player sent off. Things were looking good!
Newcastle were seemingly heading towards picking up their first win of the season, but Núñez had other ideas when he found the back of the net in the 81st minute, and a winner deep into injury time.
Newcastle had been dealt a very tough start to the season … just a shame they couldn’t make the extra man count.
The sailaway from Dubrovnik is very scenic as you sail past little islands before reaching the Adriatic. Alas, you can’t see the main city of Dubrovnik as this is tucked around the headland from the cruise port.
It was the Peninsular Club party tonight and we popped in on our way down to dinner. The Hotel manager spent a little time chatting to us and recommended taking a tour in Taranto as there wasn’t much to see in the town,
The captain was there and gave his speech and announced the most cruised passengers on board. We’ve a few years to catch them up! They were presented with a ships model as a memento.
