Cephalonia, Greece

Weather: Overcast at first but sunny by lunchtime

Jon was finally happy – sea conditions were FINALLY getting a little rougher.  Overnight it felt like you were in a washing machine – not your usual side to side rocking or simply dipping from head to toe.  It was all four directions one after the other!!.  It wasn’t that rough though … the Captain likened it to going over speed bumps.  As we had sailed into a headwind, we were a little later to dock in Cephalonia than expected.  Our feathered friend had also departed.

It had also rained overnight and still drizzling when we docked.  We had breakfast in the buffet again as we tried to sleep in as long as possible – again, no problem finding seats.

Cephalonia was the first in five ports of call in five consecutive days.  We hadn’t booked a trip and we weren’t expecting to see an awful lot in the town of Argostoli.  Jon and I had visited Cephalonia back in 1997 and had visited the Drogerati Caves and the Melisani Lake (the two highlights of the Island).

By the time we’d finished breakfast, things were starting to brighten up so we headed ashore.  We walked around the seafront and chose to cut inland at the right spot to find the pedestrianised shopping street.

The little Orthodox church on this road was open and was extremely ornate inside.  Although not as gilded as other Orthodox churches we’ve previously been inside, the paintings on the roof were stunning. Callum lit a little candle.

We had a drink (or in Callum’s case, an ice-cream) at a little café just by the church.  Jon couldn’t help noticing that the church was also air conditioned!!  This was obviously the place to shop in Argostoli … your souvenir shops alongside the more designer boutiques … and the fake goods shops too.

We headed back to the ship and grabbed a salad for lunch in the buffet.  It was pretty quiet up there – people must have been ashore or on tours.

In the afternoon they were showing the Oscar winning film, The Help, so with Callum in Kids Club, we settled down to watch it in Malabar.  The seats weren’t the comfiest but you got so wrapped up in the film, you didn’t really notice.  Obviously large chunks missed out of the book, but the film was a great adaptation.

We collected Callum from “Spooky Day” at kids clubs as soon as the film finished so we could go to the Sing-a-long Sailaway.  It was very breezy up on deck but the usual favourites were being played.  Amarillo, Hold Ya Head (Callum’s Favourite) but he also tried his best at YMCA and The Macarena.

Dressed for Dinner

Callum had decided he wanted to dine with us again this evening and wanted to try “the steak you cook yourself” in Verona.  He wanted to wear his shirt and tie this evening and he did look very smart.  We joined the queue for Verona at 6.20pm (it didn’t open until 6.30pm) but as they staggered the service, a table wouldn’t be available until 7.15pm.  Whilst we waited we took Callum up to the Planet Bar.  It was really quiet, only two other couples were in there.

In the end, we were paged at 7pm so not too long to wait.  Callum decided he wanted cheesy Mushrooms for starters, Jon had the Bruschetta and I had the Calamari.  It was really yummy.  We all had the steak your cook yourself on hot lava stones for mains.  Then to round things off, Jon and I had Tiramisu and Callum some ice-cream.

Afterwards Callum had settled into Kids Club for a bit whilst Jon and I enjoyed a glass of wine in the Glass House.  Just the one though … even though we were gaining an extra hour’s sleep tonight, we were still quite tired so we collected Callum about 21.45 and headed back to the cabin.
