Great North Run

Another trip up to Newcastle to see Granny as she was still in hospital. This weekend was the first that we’d been in Newcastle on a Great North Run weekend. Lots of roads were closed on Sunday and getting to the hospital and heading home would mean detours.

The plus side of being in here this weekend, is that we go and support Mick as he was taking part in the wheelchair race to raise money for Breast Cancer Care. The halfway point on the course comes really close to Gran and Granda’s house. We found out the approx. time Mick was planning to be at this point and headed down to see him. We bumped into Mick’s family so at least we knew we wouldn’t miss him!

Total respect for these guys – the strength in their arms and so incredibly quick on their wheels. They fly past you before you know it. We saw David Weir go pass us first – he went on to win the race. About 10 minutes later, Mick whizzed by. In between, a couple of the leading ladies ran passed – much slower and easier to get photos!!

The entertainment opposite was from the Bangshees who broke out in tunes everytime a competitor passed.

We headed off to the hospital as soon as Mick passed us – we didn’t hang around to see Mo Farah. We got to the hospital and as we drove around to the car park, we realised that the back entrance was closed off … the Great North Run goes right by the hospital!! We could have come straight here and watched Mick go by from here!

Granny’s bed overlooked the ambulance bay – it wasn’t long before the first casualties from the race started arriving at the hospital – a busy day for A&E today.
