Friday 7th September
S-Day – the steels were arrived bright and early. Just as well as the builders arrived early. The delivery driver was going to leave them on the drive. A quick chat with the lovely Christine next door and she gave permission for these to be dropped on their front garden to make it easier to get down the side of the house.

We had Andy and seven other builders on site this morning to help manhandle the steels into the extension. A rather large tea/coffee order to remember!!
The two large steels were about a three-quarters of a tonne each and the guys worked hard to get these down the passageway to the side of the house. They joked we could have a three storey extension built on the size of these steels – the structural engineering firm being particularly over cautious.

The real frustrating thing about these steels is that these were delayed for two weeks as they needed to get accurate measurements. In the end the measurements still weren’t correct as for three out of the six steels needed to be cut (too long!) so why they couldn’t have ordered the steels and cut to size, we really don’t understand.

First steel was being manoeuvred into place the long steel running along the old side of the house towards the bifold doors. Dollies took the brunt of the weight whilst the upright steels were being positioned underneath to support the steel at either end and bolted securely. One upright steel was buried in the wall by the bifolds – the other stood proud as to do the same would have meant breaking through into the living room.

Oh, as well as the steels going in we had the window people here installing the new garage and bay window! Needs finishing off on Monday, but it’s starting to take shape.
Thursday 6th September
The wooden retaining walls around the patio have been installed … and got rid of the leftover wood from down the side of the house!
New equipment to help with getting the steels in arrived. Tomorrow was going to be an interesting day!
Wednesday 5th September
Callum back to school today – and work continued. The tidying up and finishing of the patio area continued.
Tuesday 4th September
Work continued on the patio …
Monday 3rd September
Not very much for the workmen to do until the steels arrive – so a quieter few days at home! Edwin and Jay worked on sorting out the patio area – a job that would usually be one of the last to be done. On the plus side, it would mean that the ground would be fairly level for when the steels arrive.
Saturday 1st September
Number of crates over-ordered so just to show the size of these crates we have buried in the garden!
