Friday 14th September

More prep work and finding jobs to do before the electricians arrive on Monday.

Edwin made a start on preparing the floor in the new study …

Whilst Derek and Dean started prep work for when the work starts on plasterboarding, putting up batons and using a no-more-nails type approach for boarding the steels!

Oh, and they were giving the extension a bit of a clear out before the electricians arrive!

Thursday 13th September

A few things needed to be done before the steel could be lifted into place.  A PAD stone needed to be installed into the wall to take the weight of the steel (the existing thermalite bricks would just crumble).  This would mean breaking through into the living room.

Most of the acrows had now been removed – just the one left supporting the final steel whilst the mortar was setting. We could finally get a feel for the new space we were gaining at the back.  Now starting to feel like we were turning a corner.

Wednesday 12th September

So pleased I decided not to redecorate Callum’s bedroom whilst he was on Scout Camp in the Summer.  With the walls being knocked out from under his bedroom, there has been some movement which has meant some cracks appearing and plaster falling off the walls.

Andy has assured us it will be patched up once  everything is settled – hopefully will get the chance to redecorate whilst Callum is at Scarefest in October.

Meanwhile the infilling continued …

Tuesday 11th September

The guys were taking away a couple of Acrows – we’d actually become quite attached the 37 posts that were supporting our house!

A start was made on the back-filling and bricking up above the steels so these could all be gradually removed and the space gradually opened up.The walls around the vertical steels were patched in and made good and more concrete added to the holes these were sited in.

The builders also checked with the builder what was happening with the old kitchen and dining room ceilings so they could best decide how to tackle all the filling required.  “Being pulled down” they were told so hacked into the ceiling to give them the best possible access.

At 4pm, the welder finally turned up so the final steel could be installed. FINALLY!!

Monday 10th September

Another day of finishing off the steelwork.  Dean scuppered a lot of the plan for the day when he noticed the plate to secure the “missing” steel (the one the architect and structural engineer wouldn’t be needed!) was welded in the wrong place.  This steel couldn’t be installed until someone came out and welded a new plate in the correct position.  Another case of great measuring – steel is meant to sit where the gap is!!

All three bases were concreted into the holes and some concrete backfilling where the gravel sides had collapsed in the hole ensued.
