Winchester Cathedral

A day out with hubby in Winchester and our two visitors from Down-Under.  Our hit list for today was the Cathedral and the Christmas Markets that had just opened the day before.

The crazy mosaic stained glass window above the main entrance was inspiring.  The window was smashed up ages ago but rather than replace it with a new window, they pieced it back together mosiac style.  Some parts were obviously easy to put back together, but it’s rather effective.

We’d timed our arrival perfectly to join one of the free guided tours of the cathedral – a great way to learn more about its history.  The guide did like the sound of his own voice, and he was instrumental (apparently!) in uncovering some of the more recent discoveries in the cathedral.  In fairness though, his knowledge more than made up for this.

One of my favourite parts of the cathedral is the Anthony Gormley statue in the crypt.  Last time we were here, this was stood in inches of water and the effect was rather stunning.  However, in spite of all the heavy rain in the last couple of weeks, the crypt was bone dry.
