This morning we caught the train from Southampton, getting off at Winchester to complete the Hares trail there.

The trail was more compact that the Southampton trail. A lot of the hares were located around the Cathedral area with another batch located around the Great Hall / Register Office.

The first hare we came across was our favourite. It was in the window and a scout themed hare complete with necker.

More effort seemed to have been put into the decoration of the Hares than in Southampton.

As we wandered around, we came across the Wykeham Arms pub (stopped for a refreshment break!). We’d met up with several of Jon’s work colleagues here a few years back. Menu was simple – not many options, but it was good. Inside, the pub was themed around Nelson.

One of the roads the pub is sited on is Canon Street. From family history research, my great-fathers uncle lived at 61 Canon Street. Alfred Muddiman (1844 – 1903) was in 3rd Bn Rifles Brigade and moved around a fair bit before settling in Winchester, home of the Rifles. He married Kate Burgess and they had 16 children together. Several died in infancy and several of the men followed Alfred into the Army.

61 Canon Street, Winchester

If the housing along the road hasn’t been renumbered, this is 61 Canon Street.

Heading back to the station, we came across some street food stalls. Jon was taken by the burritos so we stopped for a bite to eat. The food was OK – although Callum found his fried peppers a little on the spicy side!
