Cape Town: Day 2

Good Morning, Cape Town

We were a little late landing in Cape Town but as Jon wouldn’t be arriving for another couple of hours, we weren’t too worried.  Looking out of the plane, it had been raining but it seemed to have stopped.  It didn’t take long before we’d “deplaned” and heading to passport control, keeping fingers crossed that the paperwork (affa davit, unabridged birth certificate and certified copy of Jon’s passport!) would allow Callum and I into South Africa.  Queues for immigration weren’t too long at all and our passports were stamped and we headed off to pick up our suitcases.  They were out on the carousel within 5 minutes so really quick.

However, we were pulled over heading through customs … thankfully everything seemed in order so they let us in to the country and our driver was waiting for us to whisk us off to our hotel.  Nice Mercedes with bottles of water, mints and even wipes to clean your glasses!

It took about 30 mins to get from the airport to the hotel – the lower slopes of table Mountain were visible and the sun was trying to make an appearance.  We arrived at our hotel, Radisson Blu Waterfront and checked in – our room wasn’t yet ready so would have about an hours wait.  We took this as an opportunity to grab some lunch in Tobagos and we sat outside on the deck  listening to the waves crash over the breakwater.  Very relaxing!

Callum went for the chicken wrap and a milkshake and I went for the Tobagos Club Sandwich (very nice … but very filling!) and a Coca Cola light.  By the time we’d finished, our room was ready.  Room 319 – third floor, overlooking the marina over to the V&A Waterfront – with views of the sea to the left and Table Mountain to the right.  We’d just started unpacking when Jon arrived (great, another suitcase to unpack!!). Thankfully, all Jon’s dirty washing stayed in the case.

Once we got ourselves sorted, we caught the shuttle to drop us off at the V&A Waterfront to have a wander around and catch our bearings and most importantly, figure out where to eat this evening.  The eating place choices were huge … we were not spending enough days and nights in Cape Town to try everything out.

The South Africans are Rugby mad, so Callum was really pleased to see the countdown clock to the Rugby World Cup in the Waterfront … and had to pose for a photo every day we passed it!

We went with Jon’s recommendation tonight – a place he had eaten before and enjoyed: Quay 4.  This place became our local whilst in Cape Town.

Jon liked the beer, Callum loved the milkshakes and the wine was pretty good too.  The food was really good, huge portions and very tasty.  The terrace also had great views over the waterfront and we were lucky enough that it was warm enough to sit outside.

Callum and I were starting to flag, so we heading back to the hotel, stopping at the bar to check out the beer and milkshakes here.

Friendly service and the beer was good. Callum also discovered that the green sweets weren’t actually sweets but wasabi-coated peanuts!  HOT, HOT, HOT!!

Not a late night tonight but we did need to try and catch up on sleep, ready for a full day of sightseeing tomorrow.SaveSave
