The Big Build – Week 20

Friday 19th October

The kitchen continued to take shape and it was obvious we weren’t going to be short of cupboard space! Bobby then re-rigged up the sink over the existing units!  It was getting higher and higher.  It would need to be removed on Wednesday as we had been booked in to get the work surfaces templated.

Meanwhile in the downstairs bathroom, a problem had been unearthed.  What was the plan for the waste from the shower.  There wasn’t enough space in the soil stack for the waste pipe to flow away from the shower … unless it was built up on a plinth!  We were joking about ladders to climb into the shower!

The plan was to dig out under the soil stack and insert some new pipework.  We would still need some boxing in of the waste pipe but hopefully this wouldn’t be too obvious. The pipes supplying the shower would be hidden behind a false wall.  Battening put up ready for the plasterboard to be fixed.

Thursday 18th October

We had to clear out the utility room and the leg of the kitchen overnight as work was starting on converting these to the new downstairs bathroom and utility room.

It didn’t take long for the guys to remove the units and remove the tiles from the walls.  Bobby moved the units from the utility into the study to create a larger work surface and temporary cupboard space.

When the units were removed in the utility, we discovered a double socket that we never knew existed.  It turned out Jimmy had a narrow escape and just missed drilling through the cables by a matter of centimetres!

The last of the old kitchen units were ripped out, revealing a panel hiding some dodgy wiring where a previous occupant had moved a socket.

The lack of kitchen also revealed the three layers of lino on the floor.

Meanwhile, the kitchen was starting to take shape.  A surprise delivery from Howdens this lunchtime.  the larder cupboard turned up – perfect timing as Steven was at the point when he really needed it!  Still a couple of doors missing, but hopefully they will be here next week.

Wednesday 17th October

K-Day today – our new kitchen was arriving and it arrived first thing in the morning.  Bit embarrassing as the units were split across two vans.  A couple of bits missing including the 400 width larder cupboard which Howdens promised would be here on Friday (although couldn’t promise a time).  There were also some doors missing, but these weren’t quite so critical.

Most of today was spent prepping all the units. Fitting the feet and brackets needed to fix the units to the wall.

Jimmy started on the plumbing for the new bathroom, running new pipes from the boiler, drilling though into the bathroom.

Tuesday 16th October

Yes, more flooring laid today.  Today the guys finished the seating area of the lounge and made progress laying the flooring into the hall.  Carpet and underlay ripped up and a hole discovered by the front door that the original installer hadn’t filled in!  One job for Bobby in the morning.

Monday 15th October

Work on the flooring continued today.  Steven and Jay really cracked on with the flooring and completed the flooring into the kitchen area.  This is where Steven’s planning really paid off as it was 4 complete planks alternating with 3 and two halves so no wastage in this area.  All flooring was covered up with correx to protect the floor whilst the building work continued.

Radiator taken down off the wall, ready for collection.

We were really pleased with the flooring effect.
