The Big Build – Week 23

Friday 9th November

All go today. The builders were in in the morning continuing their work.

Andy was in briefly putting the fibreglass coating on the flat roof.

Jimmy and Edwin were finishing the bay window in the lounge getting everything ready for plastering. Pipes for the new, smaller radiator were put in place. Internal brickwork needed finishing off and neatened and the floor cemented.

Once this had been done, they turned their hand to getting the showerboards up in the downstairs shower-room. As with everything, nothing is straightforward. The walls weren’t absolutely straight so the showerboards needed to be stuck to the wall and braced. It looked like a puzzle from the Crystal Maze by the time they had finished. Whilst the look was good, both said that they could have tiled the walls quicker than it took them to install the shower-boards.

Final touch to the kitchen was going in today – the worksurfaces. Three guys arrived at lunch time and they carried in the quartz work tops. Most were reasonably managable – but the island piece was large and heavy – about 1/4 tonne of quartz. Impressively, the guys managed it with a couple of gadgets to help them.

Really pleased with the end result though.

Thursday 8th November

Steven had worked wonders and we now had a working sink in the utility room. Just in time ahead of the work surfaces being installed tomorrow. Water tank for the tap installed to allow us to get hot water in an instant.

Washing machine was still temporarily in situ in the extension as a little more tidying up of the wires needed to be done behind the washing machine. No sign of tumble dryer just yet though.

In the lounge, the internal wall was being removed to open up the bay window.

Wednesday 7th November

The flooring continued into the hall today – we said to the lads that we were replacing the downstairs cloakroom so they could rip this out – it would make it a lot easier for them to lay the floor in here. A little tricky getting the flooring underneath the units under the stairs but they got there in the end. We just need to finish this off and continue the flooring into the cupboard (and finally get around to putting shelving up too).

Work was also starting in the lounge – the wall unit had been moved into the extension and the stud wall needed finishing on the lounge side and prep work to break out the wall for the new bay window.

Tuesday 6th November

Steven back in today and he worked on getting the units in the utility in situ. No tumbledryer yet – company is still awaiting for stock but it was a standard size.

No quartz work surfaces in here – instead I’d chosen a dark grey worktop. However, this did result in some painstaking work for Steven having to corner the edges, fix the trim and then get some colour match to ensure the cut ends blended into to the work surface. As with his other work, he’d done a fantastic job.

By the end of the week, we should have a fully functional sink in here so could say farewell to the high-sink in the kitchen. It had served us well and at least we didn’t have to do the washing up in the bath upstairs!

The guys were also trying to get the shower room ready to install the shower cubicle and showerboards – the first time they’d ever done this so this would be interesting!

Jay was back on site this afternoon so the brickwork under the new utility room window was now properly bricked in.

Oh, and Jon had a delivery today. New TV for the extension was delivered – the old TV was going to be rehomed in Callum’s den!

Monday 5th November

With the cement in the downstairs shower room and utility room having dried out, flooring could be put down in these rooms, the study, and hall way. It would clear this pile from the extension at least!
