Thursday 27th September
Electricians back in this morning to continue the work in the garage extension. Main electricity switched off as they were replacing the fuse box and also moving the alarm box and the gas meter board so these could be boxed in a little easier.
Still no absolute confirmation that the floor was going down today but thankfully they did turn up. Tripods and lasers positioned all over the floor, then the floor screed pumped into the room.
Andy would need to come in tomorrow morning to sweep the film off the surface. Malcolm (plasterer) was also coming in to prepare for plastering the following week. Beading needed to secured to all the corners to ensure a smooth finish.
Wednesday 26th September
The gang were back on site today and trying to finish the plasterboarding, lay the insulation and clear the room ready for the screen flow flooring to be done on Thursday afternoon.
Jimmy was making a start with the plumbing. We would be losing water and heating for the day as new pipes are laid over to the new kitchen area. This would involve moving the mains pipe and the stop-cock. The guys made sure we could access some water at all times for the essential cuppa! Priorities 🙂

Nearly all the steel work was now cladded in pink fireproof plasterboard and just a few patches of plasterboard that needs filling in here and there. Hopefully no more electrical wires have been nicked. It is starting to look more like a room and less like a shell now. As well as clearing everything out, layers of polystyrene were laid onto the base with insulating celotex on top which brings the floor level up to the level of the scraped dining room floor. Jimmy and co assured me that this was absolutely normal and the flow screed would be poured on top, filling all the gaps and would set incredibly hard and dry out comparatively quickly.
The architect popped by today and casually dropped into conversation that the flow screeding hadn’t actually been confirmed for Thursday afternoon – if they don’t turn up, then we will be seriously cheesed off as will be the guys who have worked their socks off this week to meet the incredibly tight and short-notice deadline (some working through their lunch breaks).
The plasterer should be on site next week and work needs to start on the new utility and downstairs bathroom. We need the space in the garage to move everything from the new and old utility into … but at least we know what we are using on daily basis … and what we can pack away for the next four weeks. Minimalist approach will be needed!
Revised schedule issued today and fingers crossed looking like early November is a realistic target of having things completed.
Karen & Nigel very kindly had sent us some flowers today … with all the vases packed away and in storage, I had to improvise. Thank you, they are lovely!

Tuesday 25th September
No sign of the electricians today but six builders on site. Work continued at great speed with the plasterboarding. No sign of Andy though and the fibreglassing of the final roof section. Forecast was for a dry week so really hope it is done before the next load of rain arrives. Else we would have a soggy mess of plasterboard on the ceiling.

Oh, I am now ready to move on from the “Guinness” Orange and Red colour schemed kitchen!
Monday 24th September
Another full house today with five builders and three electricians on site today. The electricians continued to wire up the extension … and the garage conversion. They have disabled all the lights in the rooms that are going to be changed in some way … and also disabled most of the sockets too!
The builders were eventually told that the floor was going down on Thursday afternoon – which sent them into a little bit of a panic as they doubted all the plasterboarding would be completed in time AND the floor completely cleared.

With it starting to get dark by 7.30pm, we needed a plan to light the kitchen. Jon remembered he had a portable light purchased ages ago which was on one of the shelves in the garage. He dig it out, installed the bulb … only to find it no longer worked!
Onto Amazon, but we’d just missed the Prime delivery cut-off for the day so this wouldn’t be with us until Wednesday! Karen then hunted high and low for the candles that hadn’t been put away into storage so at least we would have a little light in the kitchen. Torch was also located but it wasn’t particularly bright so we’ve a feeling new batteries may be needed before too much longer.
