The Big Build – Week 22

Friday 2nd November

The main extension was nearly finished and was really transformed when the correx was lifted from the floor. Work surfaces arriving next week so fingers crossed, the end is just appearing on the horizon.

Thursday 1st November

Lots more activity today with the builders trying to crack on with the utility room and downstairs shower room. Pipework put in for the radiators in the utility room and shower-room – fitted to wall, although not filled, ready to take off the wall before the painters came back. Pipework now in situ for the utility room sink, washing machine and outdoor tap … and pipework cemented into the floor.

Builders stuff and items awaiting fitting needed to be rejigged in the various rooms as more work needed to be done in the other rooms.

Major disagreements with the architects on the doors this week. Even though we had mentioned in the briefing that we wanted all the doors to be replaced downstairs (and one with windows for the door in between the extension and hall to let more light into a dark hallway), they had only budgeted for £120 for doors! This was for a new door splitting the old kitchen and a new firedoor from the study into the garage. No consideration for replacing the existing firedoor that would go from study into utility. Even worse, they suggested that the old firedoor could be replaced at the very last minute – once all the decorating was done. As the frame needed to be replaced too, this would not come out cleanly and need patching up. Also more dust generated at a time when this had started to settle down. Seriously beginning to wonder??

We chose the style of door we wanted – however, we were a little restricted on choice as we needed 3 different sized doors for the downstairs and a firedoor all in the same style.

Robbie popped in first thing to give all the woodwork a final coat. All looking really good. The Almond Quartz worktop also seemed to tone in well with new paintwork too. Phew!

Wednesday 31st October

Just Robbie in today to give the kitchen a second coat. Really pleased with the end colour and decided to continue this colour into the utility, downstairs shower room and study.

Tuesday 30th October

All go today – the main extension room was being painted and our fingers were crossed we had made the right decision on the colour. We had ummed and ahhed about painting the end wall in a “feature” colour but couldn’t decide on which colour. Another grey, lime green or teal – in the end we opted for just the one colour – Dulux Clock Face. A light grey with pale greeny/blue undertones.

First coat of paint all complete – goodness knows how Robbie managed to get all this done on his own in one day. Second coat tomorrow morning and gloss work.

The flat roof outside Callum’s bedroom window was finally getting an extra coat of fibreglass in – one coat down today. This was something we’ve been asking the architect to sort since the beginning of August. We had some really warm weather over the summer and with the heavy rain a couple of weeks back, it was leaking. With the Robbie starting to paint, we would be seriously unimpressed if it was still leaking and ruined the paintwork.
