Akureyri, Iceland, Sea Day

Weather: Blustery (Force 6 winds)
Sea: Calm

Alarm set for 5am this morning and Jon and I were up on deck bright and early for the sail into Akureyri leaving Callum in bed asleep (we did say if we weren’t in the cabin when he woke, we would be up on deck).  It was cold and blustery up on deck.  The surrounding hills sloping into the fjord still had snow on top. The lower slopes were green with plenty of small waterfalls.

Callum eventually came up to join us.  We headed up onto Deck 13 and the breeze was pretty strong.  The crew were struggling to raise the flag at the very front and the other flags were flying proud.

We were just coming into port as we headed back to the cabin to warm up before meeting mum for breakfast.  Callum excelled himself with his choice today.

We were THAT CLOSE to docking!

Smoothie of the day, 2 pain au chocolates, American Pancakes with maple syrup, bacon, black pudding, sausage and mushrooms!

Breakfast was then disturbed by an announcement from the captain.  Alas not his usual we have been given clearance for passengers to disembark… But to say Aurora couldn’t dock as the winds were exceeding 50mph so would be sailing slowing to Grundarfjord. She was literally 10 metres from the dock side when we left the cabin 10 minutes earlier!

Nothing else for it but to head back up on deck to watch the sail-out!

Letters about cancelled port were delivered to the cabin. Jon checked our policy and we were either due back £150 per person or per family. Not sure which until we read the policy in full when we get home.

We headed to the Crows Nest for a coffee this morning as the other venues were fill … No free tables but a lady did have some seats free at her table so we joined her.  The waiters were busy so it took a while to be served.

Callum was hungry so we headed up to the buffet for lunch.  We struggled to find a table as we had hit peak time.  We eventually found a table for 2 and an extra chair near the aft deck exit. A little colder there but it was fine.  Someone then spotted whales which saw everyone scarper to the back decks but we all just missed them.

We headed back to the cabin to chill and Jon introduced Callum to Pulp Fiction.  We were interrupted by the Captain again and he was bearing more bad news … Grundarfjord had been cancelled by their port authorities.  Predicted high winds means it was unsafe for the tenders to operate.  We’d continued to sail around Iceland and would be getting into Reykjavik early.  At least we’d be able to pick up the England match via mobile phones if needs be!!

Jon was incredibly disappointed as the sea state was now officially declared as rough but the seas still pretty flat and the ship was barely moving.

Syndicate quiz we did ok on tonight – nearer top than bottom!
