George Jackson
1822 – unknown (after 1881)
3rd Great-Grandfather
George is my 3rd Great Grandfather on my Dad’s side of the family. Researching the name Jackson has proved tricky as there are loads of them – particularly in the North West (they fill half the phone book!). Whoever stated that people didn’t stray far from home in the 1800s hadn’t met my family – George in particular moved around a fair bit – being a carpenter on the railways would have sent him all over the place!
circa 1822
George Jackson was born circa 1822 in Bath. No records or trace have been found of his birth or baptism to date. The only record of his marriage is from his youngest daughters birth record. As she was born in Scotland, this information was recorded.
With George being a Carpenter on the Railways, they moved around a fair bit as you will see from census info and birth records.
1841 Census
The first time we THINK we come across George was in 1841. We can’t 100% be certain this is our George, but the information fits.

1845 – Marriage to Ellen/Helen Skirving

George married Helen / Ellen SKIRVING / SKIRVEN at St Giles, Edinburgh on 23rd August 1845. Whilst this information was stated on their daughter’s birth certificate, we’ve not been able to track down any church record of this marriage.
It was only when watching the television coverage following the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II that I realised St Giles is in fact the Cathedral in Edinburgh.

1852 – Birth of daughter, Ellen Jackson
In September 1852, the family were living in Lyng, Somerset where their eldest known daughter, Ellen, was born.

Ellen JACKSON b. 6 September 1852 in Lyng, Somerset.
She married Levi Brinkworth on 25th December 1873 at St George, Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire. She died in Cardiff in 1921

Ellen was baptised at St Bartholomews in Lyng on 26th September 1852.

1854 – Birth of son, John Jackson
John JACKSON b. 1854 in Saltash, Cornwall. Whilst John appears on the Census as being born in St Stephens/Plymouth, frustratingly, I’ve not actually managed to track down his birth certificate or any baptism record.
He married Louisa Southway on 22nd June 1874 at St George, Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire. He died in Liverpool on 31st January 1937 and is buried in Anfield Cemetery (Section 21; Plot 1564)
1858 – Birth of daughter, Sarah Ann

Sarah Ann JACKSON b. 22 September 1858 in Harrabeer Hutt/Heath, Buckland Monachorum, Devon.
We’ve been unable to trace her on the census beyond 1874 when she was a witness at her brother John’s wedding. No luck either of finding any record of a marriage or her death.
A bit of a mystery as “Sarah Ann Jervis, Aunt” registered her nephew, John George Jackson’s death in 1915 – her address at the time was 112 Ramsden Street, Barrow-in-Furness.
Initially it looked as though Sarah had married a “Jervis” but this proved to be a dead end. However the Ramsden Street address given is the address our “Lewis” Ancestors lived at that time (her nephew – John George Jackson’s wife’s maternal family). It’s possible that the name has been mis-trancribed on the version of the death certificate I received and it’s in fact Sarah Lewis that recorded his death (I trangress).

A new station opened in Newcastleton on 1st March 1862 which is probably the reason why George and family had relocated here.
More information on the station development and it’s decommissioning can be found here.
1862 – Birth of daughter, Jane Jackson

Jane JACKSON b. 27 June 1862 in Castleton, Roxburghshire, Scotland. Her birth registered in Scotland confirmed parents names and the date of their marriage.
To date I have been unable to find any record of a marriage or her death

Shortly after the 1871 Census, the family moved up to Barrow-in-Furness and future spouses, Levi Brinkworth and Louisa Southway followed.
So far, I’ve struggled to find any connection of Frank Goodenough to George Jackson – although I think I have probably pinpointed a strong possibility of Frank born in Westbury (but mothers maiden name is not Jackson). As Ellen is from Scotland, it’s not likely (but not impossible) the family connection is on her side.
1873 – Marriage of Daughter, Ellen Jackson
Ellen Jackson married Levi Brinkworth at St George on 25 December 1873 at St George, Barrow-in-Furness. They moved around a bit with children born in Birkenhead and Barrow before settling in Grangetown nr Cardiff.
Levi and Ellen had 7 children:
- George Brinkworth (1874 – 1950)
- Walter Charles Brinkworth (1876 – 1940)
- Eliza Jane Brinkworth (1878 – 1879)
- Joseph Henry Brinkworth (1880 – 1905)
- Ada Jane Brinkworth (1883 – )
- Eliza Alice Brinkworth (1887 – )
- Emma Brinkworth (1904 – )
– probably a Grand-daughter
Ellen died in 1921 and Levi passed away in 1930.
1874 – Marriage of Son, John Jackson

John Jackson (aged 19) married Louisa Southway (aged 18) at St George, Barrow in Furness on 22 June 1874. Both stated their residence at time of marriage as 6 Foreman’s Cottages, Barrow-in-Furness. John was following in his father’s footsteps as a carpenter.
Witnesses to their wedding were John Satterley (X) and Sarah Ann Jackson.
John Sattlerley is likely to be John Hoare Satterley who married Louisa’s sister, Anna Maria Southway in 1869.

John & Louisa had at least 7 children together, all born in Barrow-in-Furness. In the late 1890s, John and Louisa moved to Liverpool and eventually, James, Bertha and Ada all settled there too.
- Jane Louisa Jackson (1875 – )
- John George Louisa Jackson (1879 – 1915)
- Sarah Ann Jackson (1881 – 1887)
- Susannah Jackson (1881 – 1882)
- James William Jackson (1887 – 1948)
- Bertha Jackson (1891 – 1956)
- Ada (Louisa) Jackson (1894 – 1953)
My Grandad Jackson told my Dad and uncle that he had word during WW2 that the family in Liverpool had all been killed in the Liverpool blitz but I’ve found no record of this. Vesuvius Street (where Bertha was living) did appear to be bombed, but her and her daughter survived.
1875 – Death of wife, Ellen Jackson

George’s wife, Ellen, died on 8th January 1875 at 6 Railway Cottages, Barrow-in-Furness aged 54. Cause of death was perintonitis.
Her death was reported in Soulby’s Ulverston Advertiser and General Intelligencer on Thursday 14 January 1875 (Source: British Newspaper Archive).

Her death certificate confirms that her death was registered by her daughter-in-law, Louisa Jackson (nee Southway) who was present when she died.
Barrow Cemetery Office were incredibly helpful. Now that I had Ellen’s date of death, I contacted them to find out if Ellen was buried in Barrow Cemetery.
She wasn’t buried in Barrow, but just down the road at Dalton Cemetery (Grave AC278) and laid to rest on 11th January 1875. Unfortunately, the cemetery records are fire damaged and they couldn’t tell me if anyone else is interred here with her or if there is a headstone on the grave (I was hoping to find out if George was also buried here … and when!).

Foreman’s Cottages
Foreman’s Cottages were at the back of Aberdare Street on the other side of the railway lines that used to run past there. Aureool Terrace which was adjacent to Aureool House was flattened by a Land Mine that exploded in the Timber Pond, it did extensive damage to Aberdare St as well.
Foremen’s Cottages were demolished in the 1930s as they were deemed unsanitary. Their foundations briefly reappeared during the last bout of “regeneration”, but have now disappeared for ever.

After 1881?
To date, after 1881, I have not found any trace of George Jackson, Jane Jackson or Sarah Ann Jackson. We will keep searching.
