The Big Build – Week 16

Friday 21st September

Full house this morning – 5 builders and anywhere between 1-3 electricians on site today.  With all the vehicles that accompany the workmen, we’ve asked them to try and contain all the cars to our end of the cul de sac as another house has started with building work.

Two builders finished the flooring in the garage (redoing some of the padding under the joists so it wouldn’t be too springy!) and the chipboard flooring was finished on top.  Just needs the electrics to be completed in here then the plaster boarding can be done.  We need this room fairly complete so we can relocate the kitchen in here whilst they sort the piping out in the utility and install the downstairs bathroom.

Derek, Jay and Dean worked hard boarding the roof area.

The electricians carried on with the wiring work … the curtain of wires hanging down from ceiling around the old kitchen were gradually removed – just the boiler switches that we still working were left for now.

Work finished for the day and we realised one of the electricians hadn’t put the socket in the right place – too far into the room and if it stayed where it was, we wouldn’t be able to fit the wall unit and a radiator along this wall.

We also realised that the light switch in the lounge also worked the light in the old dining room so this would need to be disabled.

Thursday 20th September

On Thursday, a couple of builders were back in the house today as were the electricians.

Little for the builders to be getting on with as they were waiting for the delivery of plasterboard and insulation.  Derek and Dean therefore continued Edwin’s work on finishing off the joists in the new study and putting down the insulation.

Electricians carried on with the first fix work.

Monday 17th September – Wednesday 19th September

Just the electricians in for the start of the week.

Classic case of the architect not keeping us informed.  Last week the ceilings were going to be pulled down.  On Monday, they were being tacked over and by Wednesday, they were being patched over.  No discussions with us and the reaction from the electricians and the builders was less than positive and our gut reaction was we would end up with a dogs breakfast of a ceiling – as in the old kitchen.  The old kitchen ceiling had split (water leak before we moved in and patched).  Another small leak reopened the patch and there are several different forms of artex on the ceiling.  In other words, a total mess.

The one real frustrating thing about this project is the lack of communication and it’s pretty annoying.

We understand that costs need to be kept under control, but when you’ve got a fairy elephant living over one section and a bathroom (and potential for leaks) over the other, it won’t be long before a patched roof ends up being more like crazy paving and we’d have to have the entire ceiling replaced.  Foot put down on this one.

All the electrical work completed down the kitchen end of the extension so the builders can come back in on Thursday and start work on plaster boarding the ceiling.

We also needed to make a decision on the flooring – we were going with QuickStep Vinyl planks … but what colour to choose!  Samples taken out into the new extension to get a better idea of the lighting in this area.  Not an easy decision – Jon liked the one I didn’t and vice-versa!!  In the end, we settled for the warmer Cottage Oak Natural – the darker one of the three samples we received.
